This publication was developed to reduce the possibilty of inadvertent substitution of the wrong medical gases by personnel when using equipment for ad- ‘ministering anesthesia, resuscitation, and therapy. CGA V1, Standard for Compressed Gas Cylinder Valve Outlet and Inlet Connections, establishes assigned standard connections for threaded outlets on cylinder valves, which results in the removal trom service of all cylinder valves having nonconforming threaded outlets [1]. CGA V-1 also describes the details of the Pin Index Safety System for fush-type medical gas cylinder valves. This system reduces the possibility of inadvertent subsbtution of the wrong Gases on equipment with yoketype connections. The Pin Index Safety System has been adopted by national and international standards organizations including the Canadian Standards Assoca- tion International (CSA) and the Intemational Organization for Standardization (ISO) 2 Scope ‘The Diameter Index Safety System defines noninterchangeable removable connections for use with medical gases at pressures of 200 psig (1380 kPa) or less.* Removable, threaded connections are readily and com- Mronly engaged or disengaged in routine use and service and are often found on regulators, resuscitation equipment, anesthesia equipment, therapy equipment, and other similar equipment. ‘The Diameter Index Safety System supplements but does not replace: — any of the means for medical gas identification currently in use; — the Pin Index Safety System the existing threaded outlet standards for ylinder valves; of automatic quick coupler vaives that also provide noninterchangeable connections for medical gases and ‘suction equipment. CGA does not designate where the Diameter Index Safety System should be applied. 3 CGAV-5 revisions 3.1. CGA 1220, 1240, and 2220), noninterchangeabie index- ing is achieved by a series of increasing and decreasing diameters in the component parts of the connections (two concentric and specific bores in the body, and two concentric and mating diameters on the nipple). To achieve noninterchangeabilty between different connections, the two diameters on each pat vary in opposite directions: as one diameter increases the other decreases. In this way, only the properly mated parts ft to- gether to alow thread engagement ‘The long-established 9/16-in, 18-thread connection for oxygen has been retained. Page 3 ‘The direction of flow through connections of the system is optional unless otherwise specified for a particular ‘connection assignment. 4.2 Optional features 4.24 Check valves “The addition of a check valve in the body portion of connections is permissible provided: — a corresponding nut and ripple that meet the connection specifications opens the valve, CAUTION: When a check valve activator (e.g., plunger, poppet, etc) is used in the body through-hole, Caution shall be exercised to ensure that the opening mechanism is properly actuated by this nut and rip- ple. — no gas flows unless the threads are engaged at least 3/4 turn; and the strength, noninterchangeablity, and nose-to-conical seat sealing are maintained, e.g, metal-to-metal contact at contact diameter. NOTE—For some applications flow capacty can be critical, and the valve design should minimize flow restriction through the connection, 422 Secondary seals A:secondary elastomer seal is permissible on the large indexing diameter and/or on the nose radius of the nip- ple provided: _ The strength, noninterchangeability, and nose-to-conical seat sealing are maintained (e.g, metal-to-metal contact at contact diameter) — Omission of the secondary seal does not affect the seal or basic integrity of the connection; and ‘On Connection No. CGA 1220 and Connection No. CGA 2220, the secondary seal is on that portion of the nipple equivalent to the large indexing diameter andlor on the nose. 423 Color coding is used, itshall be nce with NEPA 99, th Care Fe 5 Connection assignments Gases and gas mixtures assigned to the connections described in Section 6 are listed at the end of this section in Table 1. Appendix A through Append H contains detailed drawings illustrating the various connections ‘comprising the Diameter Index Safety System, Drawing Nos. 1000, 1000-A, and 2000 show the basic dimen- sions common for their respective series. The dimensions that vary from one connection to the next are shown in table form on the page following the basic dimension drawing. Separate and individual drawings for Connec- tion No. CGA 1220 for suction, Connection No. CGA 1240 for oxygen, and Connection No. CGA 2220 for gas evacuation are complete in themselves. 5.1 Connection Nos. 1020 through 1200 (1000 series) Attempts to bring together unmated parts result in interference either at the large diameter or at the small di- ‘ameter, preventing thread engagement The critical diameters from one size to the next vary in increments of 0.012 in (0.3048 mm), Manufacturing tolerances on mating connections provide a clearance from 0.003 in to 0,009 in (0.0762 mm to 0.2286 mm) at each of the dameters. The interference at either the small or the large diameter of nonmating connections is 0.003 in (0.0762 mm) minimum. Diameters A and B shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 are the variable diameters controling the Diameter Index Safety System. The small bore in the body mates with the small diameter of the nipple, and the large bore in the body mates with the large diameter of the nipple. NOTE—Nut and nipple ofthe 1000/1000-A series connections will both ft the same body. This document licensed for the sole use of the purchaser. CGA 1020-A through 1200-A (1000-A series) Co-standard Connection Nos. CGA 1020-A through 1200-A have indexing diameters identical to Connection Nos. 1020 through 1200, but have an added shoulder at the rear of the large indexing diameter. This shoulder is identical to the shoulder for the suction Connection No. CGA 1220 and uses the suction nut. This co- standard permits a larger shank diameter on the nipple, allowing for heavier duty applications. NOTE—Nut and nipple ofthe 1000/1000-A series connections will both ft the same body, 5.3 Connection No. CGA 1220 for suction (vacuum) ‘On Connection No. CGA 1220 the critical @ameters become equal, forming single mating diameters for the bore and for the nipple. The nipple of this connection is designed with an extra large bore and is assigned to suction This document licensed forthe sole use of the purchase. Licensed for the sole use of the purchaser. See license agreement penalties for distribution, CGA V-5—2008, COMPRESSED GAS ASSOCIATION, INC Pace 5 For mechanical reasons, the design of the suction nut is 1/@ in (3.18 mm) longer than the nut used with stan- dard Connection Nos. GGA 1020 through 1200. This extra length allows thread engagement between mis- matched parts if the suction nut is inadvertently used in piace of the shorter nut on standard Connection Nos. CGA 1020 through 1200, To avoid thread engagement between mismatched parts, the hole in the suction nut is enlarged so the nipples for standard Connection Nos. 1020 through 1200 will pass through it ‘The Diameter Index Safety System recognizes that suction (vacuum) equipment is commonly used in the im- mediate area where medical gas equipment is also in use. Connections to the suction equipment could inadver- tent be interchanged with connections to medical gas equipment. Therefore, suction has been assigned an indexed position, and the bore required for suction service is larger than the bore used for medical service. See Connection No. CGA 1220 in Appendix D. 5.4 Connection No. CGA 1240 for oxygen Instead of having increasing and decreasing diameters, standard Connection No. CGA 1240 retains the long- established 9/16in, 18-thread standard oxygen connection. This connection is interchangeable with ‘Connection No. CGA 022 described in CGA E-1, Standard Connections for Regulator Outlets, Torches, and Fitted Hose for Welding and Cutting Equipment [4]. Itis common practice to use the standard Connection No. CGA 1240 on equipment for administering oxygen or coxygen-enriched air mixtures, for example, nebulizers, humidifiers, ventilators, mixers (blenders), portable air compressors, and demand valves. This allows accessory equipment already fitted with Connection No. CGA 1240 to be used with these gases. 5.5 Connection Nos. CGA 2020 through 2160 (2000 series) ‘This publication provides Diameter Index Safety System connections with indexing principles similar to those of the standard 1000/1000-A series connections. The 1000/1000-A series allows for future assignments, The 2000 series connections are based on a larger thread size. The nut on the 2000 series connections slips over ‘the body thread on the 1000/1000-A series connections. ‘When establishing the eight new connections of the 2000 series, certain nipples from the 1000/1000-A series ‘connections can enter the body of certain 2000 series connections. These connections cannot be completed because the thread diameter of the 1000/1000-A series connections is too small to go over the body of the 2000 series connections. In addition, previous editions of CGA V-5 required a nut stop such as a retaining ring {0 limit the distance that a nut can move away from the shoulder. With such a nut stop, the 1000/1000-A series nipples cannot enter the 2000 series bodies. See Figure 1 and Figure 2 As a safety precaution, the hole in the nut for the 2000 series connections is larger by design to permit the +1000/1000-A series nipples to fall tough the nut f an attempt is made to connect a mismatched set. To avoid the inadvertent insertion of existing standard 1000/1000-A series nipples into the existing standard 2000 series bodies and to further protect the nipple from damage, a nut stop is now required on all connec- tions, except Connection No. CGA 1240. A nut stop limits the distance the nut can move away from the nipple shoulder. See Figure 1 and Figure 2. When Connection No. CGA 2040 is used as the outiet connection on equipment for oxygen-enriched air mix- ‘tures, the outlet connection should be prominently labeled with the name or symbol of the gas or gas mixtures being administered 56 Connection No. CGA 2220 for waste anesthetic gas disposal (gas evacuation)) Connection No. CGA 2220 is similar to Connection No. CGA 1220. The critical diameters become equal, form- ing single mating dlameters for the bore and for the nipple. This connection is based on the seme larger thread used on the eight 2000 series connections.
