10 ways the UK's eating habits have changed


The results of a survey about the UK's food-buying patterns since 1974 have been released.
What do they tell us about the nation?

1. Less white bread, less full-fat milk – Purchases 1 of


white bread dropped2 75% since 1974, while those of

2. The fall of liver4 – People used to really like eating


liver. In 1974 a typical family bought 36 g of it per
week, but now they only buy 3 g – a 92% drop.

3. The Italianisation of British meals – Italian-style


10 cooking is very popular today. Pizza rose dramatically,
with an average purchase from 2 g per week in 1974 to
53 g now. The amount of takeaway pizzas bought per
family rose by 1,000%.

4. Cheaper food – It might not always feel like it when we go to the supermarket, but doing the
weekly shop is now cheaper.

5. Freezer revolution – Just 15% of families owned a freezer in 1974. By 2000 that number stood at
94%. At the same time, there was a drop in the popularity of canned food.

6. Decline of tea – Back in 1974, the average family bought 68 g of tea per week. Now that fell to 25 g.
But tea is still more popular than instant coffee.

7. More chips – The nation's preferred form of potato is still the chip. Purchases of chips are three
20 times higher now than in 1974.

8. Different fish – The traditional accompaniment to chips is now different. A typical family bought
44 g of white fish per week in 1974. Now, that number is just 19 g. People buy more shellfish and
