New contributions of the thesis “The relationship between supplier development


activities and buyer’s competitive advantages: The case of manufacturing enterprises in Ho
Chi Minh city” was shown in the two following aspects:

1. On the theory aspect

This study has built and assessed a full set of direct and indirect supplier
development activities on the basis of synthesis from previous studies and
supplemented with a number of new scales which was discovered through a
qualitative survey.
This study has also contributed to help clarifying the mechanism of selecting
supplier development activities to increase buying firm’s competitive advantage.
In addition, the results of this study show a positive relationship between some
activities belong to indirect (Supplier recognization, Supplier evaluation, Site visits,
Supplier certification, Raising performance expectation) and direct supplier
development (Training and education of the supplier’s personel, Exchange of personel

between the buying firm and the Supplier, technology/know how transfer from buying
firm to their supplier) and buying firm’s competitive advantage in the manufacturing
industry of Ho Chi Minh City. This result support the view of previous authors who
confirmed the positive impact of supplier development activities on the buying firm’s
competitive advantage.

2. On the practical aspect

This thesis result provides a relatively comprehensive set of supplier development


activities including indirect and direct supplier development activities as well as the impact
of individual supplier development activities to buying firm’s competitive advantage. Based
on such result, enterprise managers can consider to choose suitable supplier development
activities to implement to increase or improve the company's competitive advantage.
In addition, this thesis results also show the positive impact of Technology transfer
from buying firm to suppliers to buying firm’s competitive advantages. This result will
encourage and motivate such enterprises which own high technology resources such as FDI
enterprises to transfer technology to domestic suppliers. This action will have a positive
impact on Vietnam when bring the bright hope to build the supporting industries
successfully and create more opportunities to Vietnamese enterprise engaged in high value
added stages in global supply chain.
