Social work in the foster care system

A Helper

What does it mean to be a helper? To be a helper means to be committed to helping

others in need to enhance an individual and collective well-being. There are two types of

helping, informal and professional helping. Informal helping is basically just giving someone

advice, but professional helping is giving someone the resources to help them with their

problems. i learned about helping others by just looking in my community and seeing the

resources that we had and ones we didn't have. What decided my decision to go the foster care

route was seeing and hearing how under supported and uncared for a lot of kids in the system

are.

system, along with the consequence that could happen to a child who doesn't receive proper

care. The author discusses how greater numbers of young teenagers with complicated, serious
bodily health, intellectual health, or developmental problems are entering foster care at some

stage in the early years when brain growth is most active. Every effort must be made to make

foster care a positive experience and a restoration process for the child. Threats to a child’s

development from abuse and neglect must be understood by means of all contributors in the

child welfare system. More than 500 000 kids are in foster care in the United States. Most of

these kids have been the victims of repeated abuse and extended neglect and have not

experienced a nurturing, stable surroundings at some stage in the early years of life. Such

experiences are fundamental in the short- and long-term development of a kid's intelligence and

the capacity to consequently participate fully in society. this article does a great job in saying

how it is basically every adult who comes in contact with the children to ensure their wellbeing

and safety first.

I work at dawn of hope which lets me help elderly men and women with mental and physical

disabilities live normal daily lives. I also currently work at the child study center on campus

which gives me the experience in working ang helping children.to be a professional helper I feel

you need to know their job is to help give resources and educate in a way to help a person

become the best version of themselves. This job is not to inserts on one's own thoughts and
feelings onto a person's situation. I personally think being able to help a person without any

judgment about their situation and just help them as much as I can, will come easy for me as

being a helper. What I find most challenging for me when being a helper would be not getting

too personally involved and being able to separate myself from the client's situation.
