1. How can be the magnitude of an earthquake measured? Talk about the ways to
minimize the impact of them.
Answer: The Richter Scale is one that measures the magnitude of earthquakes. It is a
logarithmic scale, that is, the progression of the effects of an earthquake intensify with that
of the magnitudes of the scale.
Ways to minimize impact:
Stay calm, don't allow panic to take over. Go to the previously established safe places;
Cover your head with both hands, placing it next to your knees. Do not use the elevators.
Stay away from objects that may fall, slide, or break..

2. What are the effects of tornadoes?


Answer:
Negative impacts of tornadoes: Injury and loss of life, Environmental pollution, Economic
loss.

Positive effects of tornadoes: Benefit for animals and local species, Improved skill level for
contractors and workers and Benefit of pollination.

3. What are the causes of thunderstorms?


Answer: Electrical damage in the home. In addition to electrical overload, lightning can
start fires in your home.

4. Describe one of the volcanoes mentioned. Where did it happen? When? How
many people were affected by it?
Answer:
The eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano on November 13, 1985. The event claimed
25,000 lives, made the city of Armero disappear and recorded in the collective memory the
face of a girl: Omayra Sánchez. Today she would be 48 years old.
5. Mention some of the warning signs of volcanoes.
Answer: Danger, Caution and Eruption
-Increase in temperature and underground movement of the volcano.

6. How can be the impact of avalanches minimized?


Answer:
Always be accompanied. Descend through risk areas one at a time and watch for signs
that precede the avalanche.
Carry a rescue beacon with you to mark your position.
Learn to use the rescue equipment.

7. Write about another natural disaster that was presented in class. Use your own
words.
Answer:
Wildfires:
The Wildfires are uncontrolled, spread rapidly and burn huge flames causing hundreds of
trees, houses, and others to burn. The causes of fires are fireworks, machine accidents,
smoking, among others.
The effects of wildfires are the loss of ecosystems and biodiversity, air pollution,
destruction of hydrographic basins and forest degradation.
