Instruction: Please answer all questions. Duration: 2 hours

Question (20 marks):

a) Consider heat transfer through the two walls of a house on a sunny day. The walls are identical,
except one is made of 10-cm thick wood, while the other wall is made of 10-cm thick brick.
Through which wall will the heat transfer be higher? Briefly explain.
(4 marks)

b) In order to control energy consumption in a building, the double-glazed or double-pane windows

is widely used nowadays. Consider a 1.2-m x 1.5-m double-pane window consists of two 3-mm
thick layers of glass that are separated by a 15-mm air gap. The heat flow through the air gap is
assumed to be only by conduction. The inside and outside air temperatures are 21 oC and 35oC,
respectively, while the convection heat transfer coefficients on the inside and outside are
15 W/m2K and 30 W/m2K, respectively. Determine,
i) the rate of heat transfer through the window, W.
ii) the temperature difference across the air gap, C.
