The response to that study, by God’s grace, has been far greater than we
could have imagined. During the last four years the emails, letters, and
personal testimonies of those who have benefitted from the study have
been gratefully received. It is always humbling to see God use our efforts as
a part of something far greater than anything we could accomplish. Within
these communications there has been a recurrent question: where do I go to
find more resources on the character of God? Thankfully, there are many fine
treatments of God’s perfections. Often, however, they are either very large
or very complex books. In response to this question, we have put together
this second study dealing primarily with the attributes of God rather than
ways the evangelical church often lives below His self-revelation. In a sense,
The Weight of Majesty is a continuation of the theme we explored in week
one of Rethinking God Biblically—that God Himself is the great attraction
of the Christian life. By His help we hope to continue going deeper into the
themes that were introduced in the first study through several forthcoming
installments in the Behold Your God series.
Behold Your God: The Weight of Majesty is set up like many other studies of
its type, with a few additions that we hope will prove beneficial. The study is
centered upon the twelve-week workbook and is designed to be used in
conjunction with the DVD series. Each week the student will work through the
workbook (five days per week) in preparation for watching the DVD. Behold
Your God: The Weight of Majesty can be used as an individual or a group
study. If you are part of a group, watch the DVD at the end of the week and
allow time to discuss the issues raised in the workbook and DVD lessons.

After the introduction, a sermon follows that reinforces and helps apply what
you have been studying in the Bible that week. Finally, you will be able to
listen to highlights from interviews with contemporary ministers whose lives
and labors reflect these same truths. These ministers include Sinclair Ferguson,
Conrad Mbewe, Andrew Davies, Anthony Mathenia, Geoffrey Thomas, Ian
Hamilton, Jeremy Walker, Garry Williams, Jordan Thomas, Joel Beeke, and Steve

The fourth-century theologian Augustine (AD 354-430) wrote, “We are speaking
of God. Is it any wonder that you do not comprehend?”1 Stephen Charnock, in his
book The Existence and Attributes of God, writes:
And whatsoever conception comes into your mind, say, This is not God;
God is more than this: If I could conceive him, he [could not be] God;
for God is incomprehensibly above whatsoever I can say, whatsoever I
can think and conceive of him.2
Referring to the impossibility of fully grasping the character of God, the twentieth-
century Chicago pastor A.W. Tozer wrote: “If all this sounds strange to modern
ears, it is only because we have for a full half century taken God for granted.
The glory of God has not been revealed to this generation of men.” These men
confront us with a fundamental aspect of God’s majesty—His incomprehensibility.

2. The tendency to humanize God, to think of Him as one of us, only bigger.
To enlarge our thoughts of God’s majesty, we must look to Scripture to see what
He says about Himself. If we will humbly set our hearts and minds to examine
God’s self-revelation, we need not be discouraged by His incomprehensibility. In
reality, incomprehensibility is one of the shining features of God’s splendor, the
weight of His majesty. It is a truth that separates Him from all else.

The Bible plainly teaches that God can be known; however, no created being
in heaven or on earth can fully comprehend God. In fact, though much can be
said that is true of Him, no word can fully represent Him, and no description can
do His perfection justice. Tozer’s little book, The Knowledge of the Holy, reminds
us that God has chosen to use things with which we are familiar to teach us
about His perfections. In other words, God uses familiar objects to help us grasp
things that are unfamiliar to us. Even these comparisons quickly fail under the
weight of His incomprehensibility. Consider Ezekiel’s vision of God. Notice how
he becomes progressively less precise in his comparisons as he gets closer to
describing God Himself.
READ EZEKIEL 1.
Did you see it? Did you notice how the prophet becomes increasingly vague in
verses 26 to 28 as he gets closer to describing God’s majesty?
So, when we say that God is like something, we are not saying He is exactly like
any created thing. In fact, we must remember when comparing things that there
are only two categories: “that which is God,” and “that which is not God”; and

counsels, all day long; but the truth is, we know very little of Him. Our
thoughts, our meditations, our expressions of Him are low, many of
them unworthy of His glory and none of them reaching His perfections.4
1. Wonderful
We normally use this word in a different way than the Scripture uses it. We use
it to describe something that is particularly good or pleasant. When we say
something tastes wonderful, we mean that it tastes very good. The Scripture,
however, uses this word to refer to something that is beyond understanding,
When the LORD appeared to the parents of Samson, they asked His name.
In Judges 13:18 we read His response: “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is
wonderful?” In other words, the self-revealing name of God would fill them with
wonder and confound them by its glory.

3. Invisible/Unapproachable
. . . the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of
lords, who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable
light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal
dominion! Amen. (1 Timothy 6:15-16)
The perfections of God’s being are beyond the sight of any creature. They create
a fundamental barrier by their innate brilliance. It is always helpful to know what
the saints of Scripture thought of God, and how it moved them to respond.
Strangely, these unapproachably glorious realities of God’s character did not
discourage or dampen Paul’s worship. They moved him to exalt the solitary
honor of this God.
Ask yourself: when you begin to understand that your God is beyond complete
understanding, do you delight to praise Him?
O Lord, enlarge our scanty thought to know the wonders Thou hast wrought;
Unloose our stammering tongues to tell Thy love, immense, unsearchable.5

The decisions of God which most clearly demonstrate that He is beyond our full
comprehension are those which have to do with our salvation.

To make this point a little clearer, let us consider the statements of three godly
men. Each of these men knew God relationally. Each walked with God. Yet each
man’s life demonstrates that even the godliest cannot fully comprehend the
unique majesty that belongs to God. We cannot even fully understand our own
selves, much less the one who formed man from dust.
JOB
In his reply to the counsel of his friends, Job speaks of the activity of God as He
rules over all aspects of creation. When he comes to the end of his description,
he tells us:
Job 26:14
Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; and how faint a word we hear
of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?
MOSES
Moses was given a vision of God’s glory. In addition to this external display of
glory, God gave him a verbal explanation of what he was seeing. Here was a
unique privilege even for Moses. What a sight! What an explanation! Yet even
here Moses was only able to see the back parts of God’s majesty.

PAUL
Verse 18 tells us that in the New Covenant the believer is able to have a clearer
understanding of God. He is the same God and it is the same faith, but Paul says
the veil over our eyes is removed. Something is wonderfully better—the dawn
has come and the New Covenant reveals more than the Old ever did. Yet Paul
tells us that, even in the New Covenant clarity, we are only able to see God (in
the person of His Son) as a man sees something in an ancient mirror, a true
reflection but not a complete one.
How is the Christian to pursue an ever clearer knowledge of a God who can
never be fully known? Can this reality be applied? The glad answer is most
definitely—Yes!
First, we apply the attribute of God’s incomprehensibility in two ways that are
connected: the way we view Him and the way we portray Him to others. We
must not give in to the temptation to reduce Him to a manageable size. He is
incomprehensible. That is His glory alone. We are obligated to guard this truth as Men may have atheistical

Agnosticism is the philosophical view that God is unknown and unknowable.
An agnostic is a person who refuses to believe in either the existence or
nonexistence of God. For our purposes practical agnosticism may be defined as
responding to God as if we were agnostics (believing God to be unknown and
unknowable), though we would never think of ourselves in that way. Practical

Practical agnosticism may be spotted in other ways. It may lead you to focus
more on experiences than objective theological truths. You say you hunger for
God, but you are not interested in the study of God’s person, as revealed in the
Scriptures. Instead you focus upon powerful experiences in the Christian life. The
result is a type of Christian mysticism; that is, a religion that prizes experiences
but is not careful to make sure of two things: that those experiences are
produced from a study of the scriptural truths, and that they are in fact approved
of by the Scriptures. After all, it is easier to seek experiences in religion than to
study the Bible.

The cure to practical agnosticism has remained the same throughout the
centuries. Unlike most medications, it is pleasant as well as effective. We cure
practical agnosticism by daily taking advantage of the reality that God has
indeed revealed Himself to us most clearly in the person and labors of His Son,
Jesus Christ! A. W. Tozer correctly wrote:
The sending of Jesus changes everything! Because of Christ, there can never
be a legitimate excuse for indulging any of the above symptoms of a practical
agnosticism. Because of Christ, God can be apprehended by faith, though He can
never be comprehended. In truth, we will never have a clearer display of God’s
splendor than that which we see in the person and work of His Son.
In the 17th chapter of John’s Gospel, we have a prayer that Jesus offered before
His closest followers. His prayer teaches us that His Father has invested Him
with authority over all humanity for the purpose of bringing people to real life,
eternal life.
. . . You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have
given Him, He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they
may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have
sent. (John 17:2-3)
And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us
understanding so that we may know Him who is true, and we are in
Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and
eternal life. (1 John 5:20)

God is not merely immortal; He alone possesses life and is the source of it.
God owes His existence to no one. He is the source of His being. He is alone in
this perfection because all other beings owe their existence to His activity. His
attributes are also self-existing. All of His attributes have their source in Him and
not one has been given to Him by another.
Psalm 62:11-12
Once God has spoken; twice I have heard this: that power belongs to
God; and lovingkindness is Yours, O Lord . . . .
Here we see that both power and lovingkindness are essentially God’s. He does
not receive them from another. They do not originate nor are they caused by
anything or anyone outside of Himself.
Romans 11:33-35
Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of
God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His
ways! For who has known the mind of the LORD, or who became
His counselor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid
back to him again?
Using a rhetorical question, Paul reminds his readers that God possesses
knowledge and did not receive it from anyone.
The independence of God means that He alone is the source of His being, and
of His continued existence. What He is He always will be, without the aid of

any created thing. All that is not God—all created things and persons—are
depending upon God for their continuance. God alone is self-sufficient. He is
dependent upon no one.

In Psalm 104 we read of God sustaining all life on earth. After listing specific ways
in which God upholds all creatures, the psalmist concludes:
They all wait for You to give them their food in due season. You give
to them, they gather it up; You open Your hand, they are satisfied
with good. You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away
their spirit, they expire and return to their dust. You send forth Your
Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the ground. (Psalm
104:27-30)
While God clearly reveals Himself to be the one who upholds all things, He is not
upheld by anything or anyone. Imagining this in a simple way will help us to see
the absurdity of thinking that God needs anything from His creation. Imagine
God holding all things, large and small, universal and microscopic, in the palm
of His hand. They exist because He willed them to exist. They have continued
to be because He has continued to will them to be. The exercise of His almighty
determination is the sole reason they exist and endure. Now imagine one of the

The God who possesses all things does not need the gifts of humanity, not even
religious gifts. But the opposite is true: these people need God to come and
rescue them.
Job 22:2-3
Can a vigorous man be of use to God, or a wise man be useful to
himself ? Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, or
profit if you make your ways perfect?
Job 35:6-8
If you have sinned, what do you accomplish against Him? And if your
transgressions are many, what do you do to Him? If you are righteous,
what do you give to Him, or what does He receive from your hand?
Your wickedness is for a man like yourself, and your righteousness is for
a son of man.
Sin and obedience certainly affect humanity, but these do not give to, nor take
from, the essential majesty of God.

The biblical witness is clear: our goods, goodness, and wickedness cannot add to
God nor reduce Him.
Imagine a place where there are breathtaking sunsets. Everyone who visits
this place talks about them. They take pictures and post them on social media.
The artistic observer attempts to capture the beauty of the sunset in a
watercolor painting. Ask yourself: is the sunset any greater, any more
spectacular because these people appreciate its beauty? Now imagine that
there is a man living in this scenic place who was born blind. He has never
seen the sunsets. Perhaps he tires of hearing the locals and tourists talk about
them. If he decides not to believe in the splendor of the sunsets because he
has never experienced them, are they in any way diminished? Are they any
less beautiful, less colorful?
How are we to live with the God Who is self-existing and independent?
It may seem at first glance that the doctrines of God’s self-existence and
independence, while true, are not particularly practical for us. However,
these truths are actually essential to a right understanding of God, and a right
understanding of God is essential to living out the Christian life.

Understanding why God does what He does is important. Consider two of the
works of God: creation and redemption (salvation). Why did He create? The
answer commonly given is that God needed someone with whom to share
His life. He was lonely. But if God is self-sufficient, can loneliness (or any other
form of incompleteness) be His reason for creating? The truth is much more
astonishing:
Strangely, the root issue here is not our definition of grace. It is our inadequate
understanding of God, in particular our ignorance of His self-existence and self-
sufficiency. We think of God as though He were a bigger version of us. We can
be selfish and quick to help those who will help us in return, so we imagine God
must be the same way. But we must not attribute our selfish ways of thinking to
God because He isn’t like us.

The idea that God needs us is a very intoxicating one. Think of it—the Almighty
God needs you! Few things give people in modern churches a greater sense of
worth than that idea—and yet it is a complete fabrication. It is a lie. If we are not
careful, we will use this idolatrous view of God to help our church membership
grow. “Join our church. God needs people like you on His team. There is a
ministry opportunity for you here.” People join thinking that they are kindly
helping God. But which god are they helping?
False religion is the worship
of a false god, or the false IGNORANCE LEADS TO IDOLATRY
worship of the true God.
Acts 17:16-31 shows that the people of Athens, for all their learning, were igno-

Paradoxically, the one person who depends upon nothing and no one, who
supports all things and all people continually, has called us into the glorious
labor of His kingdom. Paul goes so far as to say that Christians are fellow-workers
with Christ (2 Corinthians 6:1).

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
God has been described as the only one who is self-divine, self-luminous, self-

Like Erasmus, we can be guilty of thinking of God in ways that are too human.
But God is not like us; He is supreme. He alone is supreme. He is highest, utmost,
and ultimate. He is superior, rising above all others by an immeasurable distance.
How often do we slow down and really contemplate the uniqueness of God, the
supremacy of the Most High? We must take the time to do so if we are to think of
God in ways that are in line with reality.
Today we will study three aspects of the supremacy of our God. He is:
• Transcendent
We often read in the Bible that God is the Most High. Let’s be clear about two
matters:
1. “Most High” does not refer to a physical distance. The term is not speaking
of altitude, but rather of God’s elevated dignity and worth.
2.
The Bible does not depict God as the highest being in an ascending order
of beings. God is not Most High, with the highest angel coming in a close
second.
. . . [We] grant God eminence, even pre-eminence, but that is not enough;
we must grant Him transcendence in the fullest meaning of that word.

that He alone possesses heaven and earth, and as sole owner of the universe He
rescues Abraham and his family from their enemies.
God often reveals Himself in Scripture as the Most High from that point forward.
The psalmists never tire of using this description of God.

We are familiar with this title, but have we ever filled our hearts and minds with
the realities that it represents? Have we ever altered the course of our lives
because of what it means to belong to the Most High God?

We could write Psalm 135:6 over every miracle recorded in the Bible. Dividing
the Red Sea, restraining the sun’s course in Joshua’s day, feeding Elijah by ravens,
bringing Jesus to us by virgin birth, and raising Lazarus from the grave—all point
to the same thing: God rises far above all the normal laws of nature which He has
established.

Awesome in praises, working wonders?
Isaiah 40:15, 17
Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales;
Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust . . .
All the nations are as nothing before Him,
They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless.
Isaiah 40:23
He it is who reduces rulers to nothing,
Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless.
Daniel 4:34-35
I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever;
For His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
And His kingdom endures from generation to generation.
All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing . . . .
Wherever you look, nothing in creation can compare to the Most High.
We come now to the height of God’s supremacy. He is not merely Most High. He
does not merely transcend all else in a manner that makes accurate comparison
impossible. There is yet a higher description. He is solitary. That means no one is
in His category. He is alone in His perfections—unique, unequalled, unmatched,
unrivalled, unparalleled. Before anything was created, He alone was. He alone
was holy; He alone was almighty; He alone was eternal; He alone was self-
existing and self-sufficient; He alone was unchanging; He alone was all-wise; and
He alone was sovereign.
Ask yourself: was His uniqueness diminished at all when He created all things?
When He fashioned the angelic hosts to worship Him, did He inadvertently add
others to His category? No. Though mankind was created in His image, humanity
is obviously not in His category. Even after creation God remains solitary in His
majesty.
Moses spoke the following words to the Jews prior to their entering Canaan:
Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He
is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.
(Deuteronomy 4:39)

The early church leader and theologian Augustine was an ambitious man prior
to his conversion. After coming to God through Christ, this capable young man
reset his focus. He wanted above all else to know the God who had saved him.
He wrote: “I desire to know God and my soul. Nothing more? No, nothing at all.”16
We have more than mere knowledge of the Most High—He has become our
refuge! PSALM 91:9 speaks of this.
For you have made the LORD, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.
The Most High—the refuge and safe dwelling place for those who once hated
Him! Surely, like Augustine, we want to say, “I desire to know God, nothing else.”
WRITE below some things that you will need to change if you are going to
know the Most High better. What will need to be removed from your life? What
will need to be added to your life?

Sin is, at its heart, taking the perfections of God and attributing them to yourself.
So in this case sin is saying that you, not God, are uniquely raised above all
others. Your desires, your claims, your rights, your preferences—these are all
higher than those of others, even God’s!

Sin, at its root, is the desire to live as if you were the Most High, claiming all of
His perfections and privileges. Consider the ways you have been living with the
secret desire to claim the privileges of God.
You have an opportunity to take a long look at the supremacy of God in its
three biblical categories. How will this alter your views of Christ? Don’t settle
for anything less than the kind of devotion that was expressed by the Scottish
pastor Samuel Rutherford: “Oh what a fair One, what an only One, what an
excellent, lovely . . . One, is Jesus!”17
