Hydraulics Engineering - Software Descriptions

Some of the software listed below is available for downloading at this site as zipped files
or self extracting zip files. This software may be copied and used without restriction.

By downloading the software, the user accepts responsibility for understanding the
following conditions and limitations, and agrees to them:

 The FHWA does not provide user assistance or support for this software.
 The application of this software is the responsibility of the user. It is imperative
that the responsible engineer understands the potential accuracy limitations of the
program results, independently cross checks those results with other methods, and
examines the reasonableness of the results with engineering knowledge and
experience.
 There are no expressed or implied warranties.

In addition, all the software and related publications listed below are available for
purchase from McTrans or PC-TRANS.

HY7 WSPRO (2005)

WSPRO, a water surface profile computation model, can be used to analyze one-
dimensional, gradually-varied, steady flow in open channels. WSPRO can also be used to
analyze flow through bridges and culverts, embankment overflow, and scour at bridges.
(User's Manual for this version is now available in electronic format.)

Minimum requirements: IBM PC/AT or compatible, DOS, 400 Kb memory

Download the 16 bit version of the software: I agree (150 kb, zip file) to the downloading
conditions above.

Download the 32 bit version of the software: I agree (217 kb, zip file) to the downloading

HY8 Culvert Analysis version 7.0

 Distribution Memo

HDS 5 Appendix D Chart Calculator

The program HDS5eq.exe provides an interface for electronically calculating the charts
found in Appendix D of HDS-5, "Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts." The calculator
uses the inlet control equations found in Appendix A. The coefficients used by the
program can be viewed in the file Coef1.dat. The calculator may provide a slightly
different headwater than HY 8 for similar input values since HY 8 uses polynomial
equations for headwater depths from 0.5D to 3D to transition inlet control between weir
and orifice conditions

Minimum requirements: IBM PC or compatible, Win 3.1 or higher

Downloading Note: After unzipping files to a subdirectory, run HDS5eq.exe.

The Finite Element Surface Water Modeling System (FESWMS)

The FESWMS package consists of two software packages that can model flows in open
channels. FST2DH is a two-dimensional finite element surface water computer program
that can compute the direction of flow and water surface elevation in a horizontal plane.
FST2DH has the ability to model hydraulic structures commonly used by hydraulic
engineers. FST1DH is a one-dimensional finite element surface water model (not yet
available) that models unsteady flow and sediment transport in open channels.

FST2DH Version 3.22

Download the software: I agree (0.6 Mb, zip) to the downloading conditions above. To
use the software, UNZIP the downloaded files to a desired location on your hard drive.
The FST2DH executable is a stand-alone program that executes in a DOS Window.
Please contact Dr. Larry A. Arneson at (720) 963-3200 for a copy of the FST2DH Users
Manual (Release 3). He can also be reached via e-mail at larry.arneson@fhwa.dot.gov.

SMS Version 8.1

The Surface-Water Modeling System (SMS), which is a graphical user's interface for
FST2DH that can be downloaded from http://www.ems-i.com/. State DOT users please
contact Dr. Larry A. Arneson at (720) 963-3200 for instructions on how to obtain and
register the software. He can also be reached via e-mail at larry.arneson@fhwa.dot.gov.

CMPCHECK 1.0

CMPCHECK performs a design check on corrugated metal pipe based on AASHTO

"Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges" (15th Edition).

HY22 Urban Drainage Design Programs

The programs perform the following hydraulic tasks in metric or English units:

 Drainage of Highway Pavements

 Open Channel Flow Characteristics
 Critical Depth Calculations
 Development of Stage-Storage Relationships
 Reservoir Routing

The procedures used by the programs are described in FHWA's Hydraulic Engineering

Circular (HEC-22), Urban Drainage Design Manual.

Minimum Requirements: PC or clone, MS-DOS

Download the software: I agree (160 kb, zip) to the downloading conditions above

Visual Urban (HY-22) Urban Drainage Design Programs

The programs perform the following hydraulic tasks in metric or English units:

 Drainage of Highway Pavements

 Open Channel Flow Characteristics
 Critical Depth Calculations
 Development of Stage-Storage Relationships
 Reservoir Routing
 The procedures used by the programs are described in FHWA's Hydraulic
Engineering Circular (HEC-22), Urban Drainage Design Manual.

The 2001 version included two minor changes to limit out of range data for combination
grates and gutter slope. The 2002 version corrects a few misspelled words and enhances
output screen format.

Minimum Requirements: PC or clone, Windows 95/98 or NT4. The 2002 version cannot
be installed on system running Windows 2000.

Download the software: I agree (3.6 mb, zip) to the downloading conditions above. To
install the software UNZIP the downloaded file to a temporary directory on your hard
drive. Run SETUP.EXE to install the VURBAN software. The folder selected for
installation should reside in a root directory i.e. C:\VURBAN or D:\VURBAN or a
directory with a short path.

BRI-STARS

The BRI-STARS (BRIdge Stream Tube model for Alluvial River Simulation) model is a
generalized semi-two-dimensional water and sediment-routing computer model that
includes an integrated graphical interface. The model can be used to solve complicated
river engineering problems with limited data and resources and is capable of computing
alluvial scour/deposition for subcritical, supercritical, or a combination of water surface
profiles that pass through critical depth.

Unlike conventional water and sediment routing models, it is also capable of simulating
the channel widening/narrowing phenomenon as well as local scour due to highway
encroachments. It contains a subset of Federal Highway Administration's WSPRO
subroutines for computing bridge hydraulics. The BRI-STARS software and associated
manuals will be of particular interest to hydraulic engineers, bridge engineers, and fluvial
geomorphologist involved with bridge scour evaluations, and modeling of general scour
in alluvial streams in the vicinity of bridge crossings and highway encroachments. BRI-
STARS is particularly useful for evaluating sites where contraction scour and/or effects
of in-stream mining activities are a concern.

The BRI-STARS Software is available as an installable executable. The installation

includes the program, sample data files, and utility programs.
