DISTANCE LEARNING: HINDERING FACTORS AND COPING

STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY FRESHMEN NURSING STUDENTS OF


BICOL UNIVERSITY POLANGUI CAMPUS

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to determine the hindering factors and coping strategies
employed by freshmen nursing students of Bicol University Polangui Campus towards distance
learning. Specific objectives of this study were: To determine the socio-demographic profile
which includes the age, gender, ordinal position, type of learner, monthly family income, and
previous experience with distance learning; determine the hindering factors to distance learning
as perceived by the respondents in terms of various factors in financial and educational
resources, cognitive, psychological, family and home environment and internet and internet
connectivity; determine the coping strategies used by the respondents in engaging to distance
learning, and propose a strategy to lessen the hindering factors and enhance positive coping
strategies in learning. This study used a descriptive method and utilized questionnaires that were
distributed via an online platform. The respondents were freshmen nursing students of Bicol –
University Polangui Campus Academic School Year 2020 – 2021. The key findings were most
freshmen nursing students had problems with internet connection that hinder their learning and
most employed coping strategies were active coping, planning, acceptance, positive reframing,
and self-blaming as their coping strategies during a stressful situation.
