ISL88734, ISL88735 Notebook System Regulator

Evaluation Board Setup Procedure
Application Note August 14, 2006 AN1267.0
Author: Steve Laur

Description Features
The ISL88734 and ISL88735 dual step-down, switch-mode • No Current-Sense Resistor Needed (ISL88734, ISL88735)
power-supply (SMPS) controllers generate logic-supply
• Positive Current Limit Temperature Compensation
voltages in battery-powered systems. The ISL88734 and
ISL88735 include two pulse-width modulation (PWM) • 1.5% Output Voltage Accuracy
controllers, adjustable from 2V to 5.5V or fixed at 5V and • 3.3V and 5V 100mA Bootstrapped Linear Regulators
3.3V. These devices feature two linear regulators providing
5V and 3.3V always-on outputs. Each linear regulator • Internal Soft-Start and Soft-Stop Output Discharge
provides up to 100mA output current with automatic • Start-up in Pre-Bias
linear-regulator bootstrapping to the main SMPS outputs.
• Constant On-Time PWM with 100ns Load Step Response
The ISL88734 and ISL88735 include on-board power-up
sequencing, a power-good (PGOOD) output, digital • 3.3V and 5V Fixed or Adjustable Outputs
soft-start, and internal soft-stop output discharge that • 4.5V to 24V Input Voltage Range
prevents negative voltages on shutdown.
• Enhanced Ultrasonic Pulse-Skipping Mode (25kHz min)
Constant on-time PWM control scheme operates without
sense resistors and provides 100ns response to load • Power-Good (PGOOD) Signal
transients while maintaining a relatively constant switching • Overvoltage Protection Enable/Disable
frequency. The unique ultrasonic pulse-skipping mode
• Pb-Free Plus Anneal Available (RoHS Compliant)
maintains the switching frequency above 25kHz, which
eliminates noise in audio applications. Other features Applications
include pulse skipping, which maximizes efficiency in
light-load applications, and fixed-frequency PWM mode, • Notebook and Sub-Notebook Computers
which reduces RF interference in sensitive applications. • PDAs and Mobile Communication Devices
The ISL88734 and ISL88735 are available in 28 Ld QSOP • 3- and 4-Cell Li+ Battery-Powered Devices
packages and operate over the extended temperature range
(-40°C to +85°C). For a more detailed description of the Pinout
ISL88734 and ISL88735, refer to the data sheet [1]. ISL88734, ISL88735

Quick Setup Guide
Step 1: Ensure that the circuit is correctly connected to FIGURE 1. SWITCH CONFIGURATION
the supply and loads prior to applying any power. Note: Switch must be turned OFF before the next position is chosen.
Step 2: Connect the positive terminal (+) of the Power
Supply to the VIN terminal P1 and the negative
terminal (-) to the GND terminal P2. TABLE 2. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF TEST POINTS
Step 3: Connect the positive terminal (+) of a DMM to the
