In an increasingly global world, embarking upon pre-university gap years is a fast gaining

popularity (a world-wide phenomenon) among students. While this trend may bring about
some drawbacks, I would argue that they are eclipsed by a range of benefits and opportunities.

When high-school graduates take a break year, several problems can be anticipated. The first
hardship those students may go through is feeling left behind in their studies due to a long
period of time deferred their admission to college (being distracted from formal schooling). The
feeling that all friends are going to soon graduate while they are still in universities can often be
hard to overcome. In addition, gap year programmes can be expensive. As a result, if learners
are unable to shoulder the financial burden of those programmes, they may lose momentum,
which then might dawdle away their time being sidetracked from their long-term plans (then
might easily deprive of their getting a better employment prospect).

In spite of the aforementioned disadvantages above, they are at the expense of greater
benefits. Firstly, given that high school students can travel the world or learn from experts,
taking a gap year may be a golden opportunity for them to explore career interests. A calm
period of self-exploration would help learners develop valuable skills needed for personal
growth: independence and responsibility. This ,then, is the ongoing act of build up their
resumes and assessing their life goals. Secondly, thanks to these gap year programmes, high
school graduates could establish life-long relationships. Whether its bonding with other
volunteers or bumping into a fellow traveler at a restaurant, they will make tons of new
connections that may have a strong attachment to them.

In conclusion, gap year programmes’ negative aspects are somewhat justifiable, it seems to me
that they are overshadowed by the more significant merits.
