Why is gender equality important? Does it give equal power for men and women?

Does it
give equal opportunities to each of one? Men and women have contributed many things in
society. Thus, regardless of the gender of a person they deserve an equal rights to fulfill each
their roles. Gender equality means all genders will be given equal power, equal opportunities to
participate and enjoy in our society. We can’t underestimate the untiring effort and crucial role of
women in driving some changes in the society, nation building, and world.

According to United Nations, there is still much more needs to be done to accomplish full
equality of rights and opportunities between men and women. Indeed, the status of women have
improved but some women till the date the struggle continues. Therefore, Magna Carta of
women or Republic Act No. 9710 may not be enough to protect women but it is, however, a step
forward to eliminate discrimination from different sectors in our society. The Magna Carta of
Women is women’s human rights law that seeks to put an end the prejudice against women by
acknowledging, keeping from harm, fulfilling and promoting the rights of Filipino women,
especially those who belong to the basic, disadvantaged, or vulnerable groups. This law give a
protection from all types of violence, whether from public or private sectors, hence, there is no
exception. This mandates all government offices, including government-owned and controlled
corporations and local government units to adopt gender mainstreaming as a technique for
implementing the law and attaining its objectives. In relation with this, based also on the article
made by the UN, violence against women is indeed a rampant affecting all countries. In
accordance with their data, worldwide, 35% of women have encountered either physical and/or
sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. Thus, UN system keep giving
especial attention to the issue of violence against women.

Therefore, it is very crucial to put an end the different forms of gender violence and
dicrimination in skill training and secure equal access to quality education and health, economic
resources and participation in political life for both women and men. It is also necessary for us to
find sustainable ways to engage in different institutions to become an instruments for change and
promote gender equality in society. It kills out the idea of women been under looked as inferior in
society. Thus, gender equality emboldens democracy by giving everyone regardless of gender a
voice in society.
