quaeroCNC Instruction Manual

1. INTRODUCTION
quaeroCNC is a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat®/Adobe Reader® Version 5.0 and higher.

It provides users with extensive and easy-to-use search functions for documents in PDF and enables a
number of documents to be searched simultaneously in a single operation.

The documents are assigned to various user groups and/or subject areas, enabling users to refine and
speed up searches even across large numbers of documents.

The documentation is based on the screen shots of an operating system in English. Therefore, English
terms appear in the text, highlighted as references.
Example: "Start quaeroCNC and change to the Options tab“
The term Options is to be understood as a reference to the corresponding term in the screen shot. If you
select English as the menu language (see also Example Menu Language Setting), you can easily follow
the documentation and the given examples.

2. INSTALLATION

2.1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

In order to be able to install and start quaeroCNC, your system must meet the following minimum system
requirements:

• Pentium® processor

• NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or 6 (Service Pack 6 recommended) or

• Windows 2000 or

• Windows XP

• 16 MB memory (32 MB recommended)

• Approx. 130 MB free hard disk memory (MTB Version, GFME-0002-ML); If you use the
synchronization feature, 1.5GB of additional storage space may be needed for downloaded
documents in the course of one year.

• Approx. 1 MB free hard disk memory (End User Version, GFME-0004-ML)

• Adobe Acrobat®/Adobe Reader® 5.0 (or higher)

2.2. INSTALLING QUAEROCNC

In order to be able to install quaeroCNC on your computer, Adobe Acrobat®/ Adobe Reader® 5.0
(or higher) must be installed on your computer.

Although, Version 4.0 does support the full functional scope of quaeroCNC, an update is highly
recommended. You should only work with Version 4.0 of Adobe Acrobat®/Adobe Reader® , if the system
requirements cannot be met.

quaeroCNC works with Adobe Reader® 8 when the option setting “Show each document in its own
window” under “Edit/Preferences”, category “Documents” is unchecked!

This option setting needs to be adjusted manually!

Close any Internet browser such as the Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator which may be open on
your computer, along with Adobe Acrobat®/Adobe Reader®.

Insert the quaeroCNC CD/DVD into the CD/DVD drive on your computer. Open the CD/DVD drive in the
Explorer and double-click with the left mouse button on the setup.exe file to start the installation program
for quaeroCNC.

If all requirements have been met, launch the installation program. The program creates a subdirectory
\quaero in the C:\Program Files folder, which contains essential program information. If this directory
already exists, having been created by an earlier version of quaeroCNC, the information is added to the
existing contents.

In a second step, a check is made to verify that Adobe Reader 5.0 (or higher) is installed on your
computer. If Adobe Reader is not installed, you may install it at this point if required. The search plug-in
Quaero.api is then installed in the Adobe Acrobat®/ Adobe Reader® plug_ins directory.

You must confirm the request, whether the Acrobat®/ Adobe Reader® plug_ins folder shall be installed. If
you have already installed quaeroCNC, a second request will be displayed asking whether the existing
installation should be overwritten.

If you are updating an existing installation of quaeroCNC using the new CD/DVD-ROM, and if you used
the synchronization feature before, you may have several documents twice. In order to optimize the disk

2.3. INSTALLING quaeroCNC ON HARD DISK

quaeroCNC can be reconfigured for the purpose of hard disk utilization. However, this is not an automatic
process - the operation has to be carried out manually.

Proceed as follows:

Create a new folder on the hard disk.

Example: c:\<ProductionName>

First, copy all required PDF documents and the data subdirectory from the CD/DVD to this directory.
Next, open the quaeroCNC program folder. This is located by default in the C:\Program Files\Quaero
folder. If you have selected a different directory when installing quaeroCNC, you will need to select this.

Click with the right mouse button to highlight the quaero.ini file and select Open with. A selection window
is displayed containing a list of various applications. Select the editor and confirm with OK. Now change
the line (Path=) by entering the letter representing the hard disk drive and the hard disk installation folder.

3.4. FULL-TEXT SEARCH

The full text search can be used to find all words which appear in the documents of a quaeroCNC
assembly. Exceptions include words known as “stop words” (a, and, or, corresponding to, etc.) which do
not have a particular meaning but appear frequently in texts.

Next to the textbox for the search term, there are 4 buttons

– Index (see chapter index search)

– Listing all new PDF documents

– Help

– PDF Download (see chapter PDF Download)

You can start the search with the button (or by pressing Enter). Enter the search term and start the
search by pressing Enter or clicking on the Search button. Upper and lower case letters are not
distinguished. If the search is completed, the number of searched PDF documents and the number of hits
are displayed.

Linking search terms – Quantitative logic

quaeroCNC supports the linking of a number of search terms using the (+) and (-) operators. These
operators should be entered without blank immediately in front of the search term.

+ the word must appear in the hit list

- the word must not appear in the hit list

If no operators appear in front of a search term, this term may appear in the hit list. If several search
terms are entered without operators, every page in which at least one of the search terms appears is
considered a hit.

If a search is launched with only one search term, the plus sign is not required and every page in which
the search term appears will be displayed as a hit.

drive +motor -gear finds all pages in which the word

drive may occur

motor must occur and
gear must not occur

Linking search terms – Boolean operators

In addition to quantitative logic, the Boolean operators AND, OR, and AND NOT may be used in
quaeroCNC.

(drive and motor) and not(gear) finds all pages in which the words
drive and motor must occur and gear must not occur

If more than two items are searched for, the parentheses are necessary. The parenthesis after AND NOT
should be placed directly behind NOT!!

quaeroCNC Instruction Manual

Searching with wildcards

In quaeroCNC search operations, wildcards may be used.

* none, one or more characters

? none or only one character
! one character only

Example:

form* will find results such as form, format, formula, formulate, ...etc.
paten! will find as a result only patent
b?ar* will find results such as bar, bear, barrier, etc.

Phrase search
If you want to search for an exact phrase, activate the Match Phrase checkbox.

The phrase search is carried out in the following way:

First, all pages containing the single words of the phrase (except for stop words) are searched for. The
detected hit pages are then searched for the phrase to find out whether the words of the phrase appear in
exactly the right sequence in the document.

Therefore, the search is not carried out in the index but in the document itself. This is more time
consuming.

Since the displayed number of hits refers to the number of found documents in the index, not as a
phrase, it is possible that no document containing this phrase is found, though, a hit number is displayed.

There are always 20 hits added together to the hit list. If there are more than 20 hits, you can page the hit
list with the and buttons. You can set the step width, here 20, under Options. Twenty is set as
default value.

Example

• Start quaeroCNC and change to the Full-Text Search tab.

• Make sure that the textbox for the search term is empty and that there are no filters applied
(see also Figure 16)!

• Enter +rigid +tapping as a search phrase in the textbox (see also Figure 21).

• Start the search by pressing ENTER or by clicking on .

• In this example, 1026 documents have been searched. In 196 of these documents, 2974 hits
were found and added to the hit list. Note that the hits have not been found in English documents
only, but also in documents of other languages (see also Figure 21). In order to get hits from
English documents only, activate the language filter and restart the search. (See also examples
described before).

the quaeroCNC edition, with the exception of stop words. To perform an index search, press the Index
button and use the keyboard to enter the first letters of the search term. The index will jump automatically
to the first word beginning with this string of letters.

You can accept the selected search term with OK. The window closes automatically. Delete deletes the
search term from the entry line, Cancel closes the index window.

quaeroCNC Instruction Manual

• Updating quaeroCNC
To use this function, special authorization is required. It is quite time-consuming.

The Update Index button downloads a new quaeroCNC index from the Fanuc GE Server. The URL of
the Server is given in quaero.ini (see chapter 2.3. ).

Depending on the index version of the client, the plug-in automatically downloads either an update or a
new full index from the Server. Regular updates ensure the download of the smaller update index
containing only new and updated documents. These documents are then integrated into the locally
available full index. If a new full index has been downloaded, it replaces the index of the local system.

If the download of the index has been successfully completed, all PDFs not locally available are
determined. If the download of the index fails, the previous index is restored.

The PDFs are copied to the local quaeroCNC directory. If errors occur during the download, the file
names of the corresponding PDFs are stored in missing_files_from_server.txt in the tmp subdirectory of
the quaeroCNC program directory.

Example Updating quaeroCNC

• Start quaeroCNC and change to the Options tab.

• Make sure that your PremiumNet user information is backed up in the Synchronization section
under PremiumNet Login and is set under Location PremiumNet. In this example
(see also Figure 35), only English texts have been downloaded. n order to do so, go to the
Document Options (download) section and select the Use File Filter option and go to the File
Filter/Document Language section and select English.
Obsolete documents are deleted after the synchronization (Delete Obsolete Documents: Yes).
Besides, only new or updated documents with respect to the last synchronization date are
checked for availability (Check Documents (download): New/Updated). If you set this option to
All, the system would check all documents in the index for availability, irrespective of their state.

• A dialog window appears indicating the download status of the operation. In a first step, the
UpdateCtrl.ini file is downloaded that contains important information about the currently valid
index. In this step, access and license data are exchanged as well.

• If you cannot log in to the Fanuc GE Server due to incorrect log-in data, the following dialog
Figure 37 appears.

• After a successful log-in to the Server, the actual updating procedure starts. The procedure
comprises 3 steps 1) index update, 2) availability check of documents (PDF files) on the target
computer, and 3) download of not available documents (PDF files) plus a plug-in re-start.
In step1 two operations are possible, either the integration of an update index or the download
and replacement of a full index. An update index contains only changes with respect to the
previous full index. The plug-in automatically decides whether to download the full index or just
an update by downloading the required update index packages.

• Below, you see some of the dialogs displayed during updating the index by downloading an
update index. Then, you see the dialogs displayed during updating the index by downloading a
new full index. After that, steps 2 and 3 of the updating procedure are described.

quaeroCNC Instruction Manual

• If too many update index packages are required for an update, the system proposes to download
a new full index. Some of the dialogs appearing during the index update by downloading a new
full index are described below.

• After a successful index update, in step 2, the documents (PDF files) are checked for availability
on the target computer on the basis of the new index and the settings in the
Synchronisation/Document Options section in the Options tab (see also Figure 35, Figure 38).

• On the basis of the results of step 2, the unavailable documents are downloaded in step 3
(see also Figure 39). Upon completion of the download, the plug-in is re-started.

Figure 39 Updating PDF documents

If you cancel the update procedure during step 1, the old index will be restored. However, if you cancel
the procedure during steps 2 or 3, this will not influence the download of the new index. It is possible to
download missing documents later. Use the PDF-Download button in the Full-Text Search tab. Refer to
the instructions and the example for PDF download in chapter 3.4. /PDF Download!
