20 Volume and Surface Area of Solids We kniow that bodies that have a definite shape are called solide and the space occupied by a sold body i called ts volume Solid bodies occur in various shapes. In our previous class, we have learnt about eubotds, cubes, cylinders, cones and spheres. In this chapter, we val learn about the volume and surface area of a cuboid, a cube and aoylinder. ‘cuBoID AND CUBE ‘cuboid A solid bounded by ste rectangular plane faces 1s called a cuboid. A matchbox, a chalkbox a tea packet, a brick, a tle, a book, et. are all examples ofa cubotd ‘Acubold has 6 rectangular faces, 12 edges and 8 verties, [Any face of a eubold may be calle its base ‘The four faces which mect the base are called the lateral faces of the cubok In the gen figure, 6 faces are ABCD, EFGH, EFBA, HGCD, EHDA and FGCB: 12 edges are AB, CD, EF, GH, AE, DH, BF, CG, AD, EH, FG and BC: and Svertioes are AB, C, D, E.G. H, Cube Acubold whose length, breadth and helght are all equal ts called ‘cube, lee cubes, sar cubes, dice, ec. areal examples of cube. ach edge of cube i called its side Volume ofa Solid The space occupled by a solid body t called its volume, The standard unit of volume iscuble centimetre, written as et em or em * The volume of a cube of side 1 em ts1.em*.
