I can try to pull this together.

For a spare ECU setup the following are needed.

AlfaOBD + a recommended OBD adapter

Spare ECU '14 + '15 seem to be compatible with the same years. '16 and up have a DEF quality sensor
the earlier years did not.

Injector code information. Thanks to GDE + Gputah for sharing this info.

Battery charger – I've done it without but I have seen in many vids for witech (the dealer tool for
programing) hooking up a charger so the battery voltage stays good while writing to the ECM. I've
started doing this every time I make changes.

With the truck shut off.


Pull your existing ECU and plug in your replacement. Do not start.

This is for AlfaOBD on Android.

With the truck off – key in the “run “ position

Open AlfaOBD
Under “my interface” connect to your OBD adapter.
Under “My Car” select Dodge RAM.
1ST drop down box > RAM 1500 (DS/DX)
2ND drop down box > Engine
3RD drop down box > Diesel Bosch EDC17C49
Select “connect” on the next screen.

Take a look at the symbols on the lower right of AlfaOBD.


The car with the hood open is “Active Diagnostics” This is where you will input VIN and Injector
codes.
Open “Active Diagnostics” and use the drop down to navigate to VIN write – It's the last entry. Follow
the instructions to write the desired VIN.
Use the drop down again to navigate to 6-cylinder: Injector Quantity Adjustment cyl 1. Follow the
instructions to write the injector code for #1. Repeat for the other 5 injectors.
After the injectors are coded – go to the “engine” symbol. Lower RH of AlfaOBD. This is the “faults”
screen. Read and clear all faults. Chances are if you picked up a salvage yard ECM you will have faults
from a wreck or otherwise.

System status is the battery symbol on the lower RH of AlfaOBD. If you do a read system ID you will
see the current (and original) VIN. Handy to double check that it was written to the ECU.
After all this power off for at least 2 minutes. My understanding is it takes that long for the CANbus
power to shut down. When you power up all the modules “shake hands” and communicate with each
other.

Start you truck, all should be well.

After this set up you should be able to swap ECU's just by unbolting and replacing at will.
