ABSTRACT

This research entitled “The Use of Total Physical Response as a Method to Teach
Listening Comprehension at SMP Negeri 1 Sumber” was to find out the effectiveness
and how the implementation of TPR with Flashcard as a media to teach listening
comprehension. The method of this research is pre-experimental research and this
research uses quantitative research. The sample of this research is class of VII A with 43
students. The instruments of the research are test (pre-test and post-test. The collected
data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of the data analysis showed that:
the mean scores of pre-test was 65.11, the mean scores of post-test was 82.32, the taccount
was 7.024, the ttable with degree of freedom (df) 42 and level of significance at 0.05 was
2.018. Based on the data analysis, the alternative hypothesis of this research was
accepted because taccount was higher than ttable (7.024 > 2.018). It also means that there is a
significance difference to the students’ score in listening comprehension after learning
using TPR with Flashcard as a media. Based on taccount 7.024 and ttable 2.018 we can
obtain difference - the obtained difference is 5.006. It means that TPR
with Flashcard as a media is effective to teach listening comprehension in first grade
students of junior high school.
