The analysis of the text One Summer Night by Ambrose Bierce (1893).

He was an American short

story writer, journalist, poet, and American Civil War veteran.
The text presents a dark humorous type of the story. Ambrose Bierce’s short story “One Summer
Night” is a terrifying yet humorous tale of Henry Armstrong who is buried – perhaps buried alive – and ter-
rorizes medical school student/grave robbers who chose to steal his body for medical research.
According to the genre, the text presents tragedy-comedy, short story.
The story is written in the third-person narration (objective) so it creates an objective sight on this
story.
The atmosphere of the whole story is terrible, fearful and scaring. The story creates the impres-
sion of anxiety, nervous tension so we can feel dark mood. The place of the story is not specified.
The plot is a dark summer night, three men were digging into Henry's grave and when they took
out and opened the coffin the dead man sat up.
And the text can be divided into 3 logical parts. The exposition comes when the writer prepares us
for the story by telling the man lies in his coffin, aware of his predicament, but relaxed enough to
fall asleep regardless. The climax is when they reach the body of Henry Armstrong, he sits up and scares
them away. And denouement is when the following morning, Jess is waiting for the students at
their university. He demands payment for his work while Henry Armstrong lies outstretched on a
table with his head “defiled with blood and clay from a blow with a spade.”

The idea of the story
The author used a lot of lexical expressive means and stylistics devices. For example:

I liked the story because at the beginning I thought it would be the typical story about a man who
was buried alive. But continuing reading, the story catches my attention and it could surprise me, it
was a very unexpected end.
The story was difficult to read because it had many unknown words, but I could say I learned new
vocabulary.
