It is used to iron the cloths (ii) Heating element: Made up of Nichrome and placed above the sole plate between Mica sheets. Properties of Heating Element ( Nichrome ) i) High Resistance, ii) High melting point, iii) Low temperature coefficient of resistance, iv) Low oxidation, (iii) Mica: The mica is good insulator and good thermal conductors and has very high melting points. Mica sheets are used to cover the heating element. (iv) Asbestos sheet: This sheet is placed above the mica sheet; it is a good insulator and a good thermal reflector to reflect the complete heat to the base plate. (v) _ Pressure / Weight plate: If the weight plate is placed over the asbestos sheet for uniform distribution of heat. (vi) Handle: Made up of wood or ebonite. It is used to hold the iron. (vii) Thermostat: This is connected in series with the heating element to control the heat. (viii) Switch: To On or Off the supply. (ix) Chord: To Supply electricity to coil. It is covered with cotton layer. (d) Faults: (i) — Short circuit fault: - Short circuited coil or burnt coil (ii) Open circuit fault: - Due to brakeage in heating elements, loose connection, and disconnection of heating elements from the supply terminals. (iii) Earth fault: - Due to damaged insulation coil may touch the body. PROCEDURE: Dismantle the iron and identify all its parts. For testing the iron, the following tests are carried out. A] Continuity test: 1. Connect a test lamp in series with the heating element. 2. If lamp glows with normal brightness - short circuit fault 3. If lamp does not glow —Open circuit fault 4. If lamp glows dim — No fault B] Leakage test: 1. Connect the lamp for leakage test. 2. If lamp glows — Leakage fault SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: 1)Always be careful. 2)Do not leave any joints open. 3)Do not keep sharp tools in your pockets. 4)Always use tester to check live wire. CONCLUSIO! Construction:- (1) Metallic Tube:- The tube is made up of copper and chromium plated. It is a hollow tube and protects the inner part. It absorbs the heat from the inner part and transmits the heat to the liquid or water to be heated. (2)Heating Element:- It is made up of Nichrome. It is in the form of coil and placed inside in the copper tube centrally. The coil is connected to the electric supply through the terminal housing and supply chord. (2)Insulating Powder:- The gap between the heating element and the tube is filled with insulating powder like MgO. The material is having good insulating property at high temperature and it is a good thermal conductor. The other parts are a) Terminal housing, 2) Supply Chord, 3) Minimum water level indicator strip Type of Faults: ¢ Short circuit fault :- Short circuited coil or burnt coil * Open circuit fault: - Due to brakeage in heating elements, loose connection, and disconnection of heating elements from the supply terminals. These lamps work on the principle of excited atom of a gas. These lamps have a transparent enclosure containing gas (Neutral atoms, positive ions and electrons) at low pressure. When a potential difference is applied to the ends of the enclosure through suitable filaments, the positive ions drift to the cathode and the electrons drift to the anode. During the passage of electrons to the anode, they collide with neutral atoms of the gas separating an electron from it temporarily which returning to its orbit gives out light energy. Parts of fluorescent tube light:- 1) Tube:- Itis a long tube sealed at cither ends with electrodes, the inside of it being coated with fluorescent powder called Phosphor, 2) Starter:- Starter puts the electrodes directly across supply mains and completes the circuit at the time of stating. So that choke gets charge and electrodes get heated to emit sufficient electrodes. 3) Choke:- Provide a voltage impulse for starting and acts as a ballast or stabilizer on running period. PROCEDURE:- The choke is connected in series with the supply and tube. Starter is connected across the tube terminals. Connect the circuit as per circuit diagram. Testing of Choke coil:- By connecting the test lamp in series with the choke coil, the condition of the choke coil is observed Observation table:- 1 Number of flickering are observed 2-3 2 | Time required to start the tube is 1-2 second 3 | After starting the tube starter is removed | Tube continuous to glow SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: 1)Always be careful. 2)Do not leave any joints open. 3)Do not keep sharp tools in your pockets. 4)Always use tester to check live wire. CONCLUSION:: Thus the fluorescent tube light is studied and the choke coil is tested.
