HYDROLOGY (CE 317) FINAL EXAMINATION

SY 2021-2022
PART II 11:00AM – 2:00 PM
Instruction:
Answer the test questions within 2 hrs. and 30 minutes.
Submit all answers in pdf form with name on every page. Indicate also the page
number.

1. The following are the data obtained in a stream-gauging operation. A current meter with a
calibration equation V = (0.32N + 0.032) m/s, where N = revolutions per second was used to
measure the velocity at 0.6 depth. Using the mid-section method, calculate the discharge in
the stream.

2. The ordinates of a 6-h hydrograph are as given below:

If two storms, each of 1-cm rainfall excess and 6-h duration occur in succession. Calculate
the resulting hydrograph of flow. Assume base flow to be uniform at 10 cu.m per seconds
3. Rainfall of magnitudes 3.0 and 2.0 cm occurring in two consecutive 4-h duration of a
catchment 770 km2 produces the hydrograph of flow due to 6 hour D rainfall.

Time (h) 0 6 12 18 24 30 36 42 48 54 60 66 72
Observed flow (m3/s) 40 65 215 360 400 350 270 205 145 100 70 40 42

Derive the 6-h unit hydrograph and make suitable assumptions of base flow. Estimate the
rainfall excess in ɸ (phi) index.

4. Explain the rational method in computing peak discharge and its applicability of use. What is
the importance of time concentration in the estimation of flood in rational formula.

5. In flood frequency analysis outline the procedures and appropriate formulas in the
determination of maximum flood using
a. Gumbels method
b. Log- Pearson Type III Distribution

6. Discuss the procedures in the conduct of streamflow measurements using direct and indirect
methods.
