This is your self- instructional learner module in English 6. All the activities
provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand: Making

PRETEST

Direction: Write Yes if the statement is correct; otherwise, you write No.

comprehension.
________ 2. Personal experiences has no connection to learning.
________ 3. Making connections will help the readers keep in tract of
the ideas leading to understanding.
________ 4. Making connections make the readers forget everything
they have read.
________ 5. Personal experiences has a way of helping the readers to
connect to what was read.

RECAP

Reading is merely useless when a reader doesn’t understand the text

being read. Hence comprehension is very important since it’s a way of
connecting the readers to the text. Various ways of acquiring it could be done
through the help of a dictionary, searching through the web or using root
word analysis. Strategies like these very useful especially to the learners who
have just started understanding the meaning of the words.

Yet, there is another approach which will definitely enliven what has
already stored in your memory or your prior knowledge, in which you relate
yourself to the text being presented or viewed. This approach will help the
learners refrain from having a burden in understanding the meaning of the
text. This only requires your willingness to think deeply and activate what has

6
stored already in your mind. Your prior knowledge, concept, belief and
reactions are indeed essential.

Let’s start!

LESSON

What do you feel when you see a dirty environment? A polluted water?
Air?a denuded land perhaps?

Each one of us has a responsibility in taking care of our environment.

Our environment is already in dangered of dying because of our doings.
Barren mountains are highly visible, rampant garbages are seen everywhere,
polluted air makes the people sick and many more. Immediate response is
what our environment need.

Let’s read this conversation:

One fine morning, father Joseph and son Steve have a walk along the
beach. Both are enjoying the sea breeze and the scenery as well.

Joseph: Do you know that the sea we walked along is very rich in narural
resources?

Steve: Wondering, what made this sea water rich father?

Joseph: The seafoods that we placed on our table all came from the sea.

Steve: Oh, that sounds amazing! This sea produces so many fish, crabs,
prawns and many more?

Joseph: Yes son, this seawater doesn’t just give us the different seafoods we
eat but also some minerals like magnesium and sodium chloride too.
But it is slowly dying because of the people who abused its beauty by
throwing garbage in it.

Steve: Sad to hear that father. How could these garbage constitute to the
killing of the seawater?.

Joseph: These garbages pollute the water that led to the dying of sea
creatures.

7
Steve: We better tell these people to help clean their surroundings and
dispose their garbage properly. So, the next generation will see and
experience the beauty of the sea like me.

 This scenario reminds me of _______________________________________.

 I felt ______________________________________________________________.
 I can relate to _____________________________________________________.
 Because __________________________________________________________.
 Their conversation is similar to ____________________________________.
That ____________________________________________________________________.

By filling in the needed statements made the readers link with their
personal experiences to the given information.

Making Connections is a critical reading comprehension strategy that

help us makes meaning on what we are reading. It links what the students
read to what they already know. This strategy helps the learners to
comprehend by activating their prior knowledge. Since you can get this out
from your personal experience thus you’ll get more involved on the text
that generally full understanding.

POSTTEST

Directions: Read the selection and make connections between the information
and personal experience.

Gold in Garbage
( Ann Corvera)

Avella Lipata used to make the rounds of Makati hotels and offices in her
truck to collect waste materials. Back at the warehouse of her company, she and
ten other workers carfully sorted items that would not be sent to dumpsites
instead sold at competitive prices.
When her story was featured as an exceptional solid waste management
initiative , it caught the attention of the Solid Waste Management Program.
Any much association might have much to gain from implementing a solid
waste management program. For a busy commercial district, setting up an
organized waste collection and disposal system was not only cost -efficient , but
also helped maintain the malls’ standards as premier lifestyle centers. It was an
association that initiated the waste collection and recycling program in 1996.
By the time the group contacted Avella’s company 10 years later, it had
reduced the amount of garbage hauled from the malls from 20 trucks to seven
trucks everyday. Through further segregation , two truckloads of collected
materials can still be recovered and sold.
