Journey responses – 15.05.

2020

5. In the beginning of the story the uncle is excited and happy for his journey to the city as an attempt to
get his lost land back. After not getting the answer he wanted to hear, he started going back sad,
frustrated and angry. The uncle realizes that his land is land is going to be used for housing and train
tracks.

6. The man sitting on his bed and looking at his palms is symbolizing the helplessness and powerlessness in
the men. This is contrasting to the fact that earlier in the story where he wanted to punch Paul which
shows the graduate loss of power throughout the story.

7. I believe that the author did this on purpose. Firstly, this sense of blindness is used by Grace to show
how old the old man was, and in a way weak and vulnerable. I also believe that the author said that to
show the amusing land and the fact that it was so important to human eyesight. Lastly, I think it is also
used as a way to show that the men doesn’t realize that he could do nothing to save his land.

10. I think the author uses feet and legs as a way to show that even if the uncle was tired from the
Journey, he would still continue to walk which shows an aspect of perseverance.

Food for thought

2. I think the reader can sympathize with the Uncle because losing a home from day to day would be
extremely hard for anybody. The uncle also wants his nieces and nephews to live on his land which make is
especially hard for him, not being able to provide for his family.

3. I believe that the author wanted the story to be as close to real life experiences. During our lives we do
not always have a clear outcome to a situation which can make it more problematic or stressful. The
author tries to show the real. Dynamic of life even in this short story.
