Outline for our grade 9 summer examination

Part one: written responses

A commentary on either a prose extract or a poem. Both texts will be previously un-
seen. The commentary (not an essay) of approximately 500 words or more will be
typed in class and posted immediately afterwards on ManageBac. You will need to
write your commentary within a lesson but will have approximately 20 minutes of the
previous lesson to annotate your text and outline your commentary. Your preparation
work must be submitted with your commentary in a single document.

Or

An essay of minimally 500 words on at least two of our short stories. A limited num-
ber of our short stories will be selected; you will not know which of these will be
chosen for the exam. You will be given a short series of possible tasks, from which
you will chose one. While responding to your chosen task, you will compare on con-
trast your chosen short stories. Your essay will be written within a lesson, but will
have approximately 20 minutes of the previous lesson to write notes on your task and
develop an outline for your essay. Your preparation work must be submitted with
your commentary in a single document.

Part two: oral responses

You will be interviewed for approximately 10 minutes on either George Orwell’s
1984 or a selection of our short stories and/poems, and your learner portfolio.

You cannot use the same work in both parts of this examination

Total time for the two parts: just under two lessons
