Science

Salty waters!
Objectives: to state salt properties.
Modality: experiment.
Grouping: group/whole class activity.
Materials:
1. 2 plastic containers
2. Markers
3. Thermometer
4. Salt
5. Small spoon.
Scientific thinking process:
 Hypothesising
 Interpreting data
 Experimenting

Procedure:
1. State the problem: which freezes first,
salt water or fresh water? Will salt water and fresh water freeze at
the same temperature?
2. write a hypothesis: students answers
(make a poster)
3. explain the experiment: list the steps to
follow in order to test the hypothesis.
4. record data: draw or write down
observations and steps during the experiment (it depends on the age
of the students)
5. draw a conclusion: based on the
observations, report what happened. Was the hypothesis true? How
does what happened compare with the hypothesis you stated in 2.
6. compare samples

Experiment:
1. write S-w on one container and F-W on the other.
2. fill both containers with water.
3. add salt to the container with the S-w label on it. (Until no more will
dissolve: should be 2 spoonfuls)
4. use the thermometer to measure and record the temperature of
water in each container.
5. place both containers into the freezer.

6. after 24 hours, remove the containers from the freezer and record
your observations: temperature and state of water.
7. make a conclusion (fresh water will freeze, salt water won’t)
8. compare both samples and explain the reasons.
