Homework 9 - Part Reduction

Soap Box Lid

The upper lid of the soap box has two subcomponents

made from plastic. It could have been made as a single
component and still have same functionality of
covering the box. I think they might have made it in two
parts for aesthetic purpose.

Soap Box Assembly:

The overall assembly is made up of three plastic

components. It could have been manufactured as a single
plastic component if we incorporate hinges between
them.

Stapler:

In the current model, the upper assembly has two

components, one made of plastic and the other from
sheet metal. The two components could have been
made as one metal part to reduce the assembly time.
Whiteboard Pen and Eraser:

We can eliminate the eraser (the plastic and the brush)

if we can incorporate the brush on the top of the pen
cap. It would only take gluing the two parts. This is mainly
applicable in small-sized whiteboard production where
large erasers are not useful.

Steel Tiffin Box:

The locking mechanism for the tiffin is made up of 6 components

and is too complex for assembling as well as manufacturing. It
would have been much simpler if they put the threading
mechanism for locking the tiffin.
