Example 4

Unequal angle 125mm x 75mm is required to carry tension load of 430kN. The angle section is
connected to a gusset plate through larger leg by 18mm diameter bolt as shown. Select suitable
section for the angle from available section of (125x75x8, 125x75x10, 125x75x12).use EN 10210-
1 :S275H.

Given
𝑁𝐸𝑑 = 430𝑘𝑁
fu =430Mpa for thickness for less than 40 mm
fy = 275Mpa

Note that there is no best-fit equation for the calculation An. So let us use channel and T sections.
Cross section resistance: assume thickness to be 8mm
Ag = w1 xt- (w2 -t) t = 125x8 – (75-8) x8 = 1538mm2
Ag fy 1538 mm2 x 275 Mpa
NpL,Rd = = = 422.95kN < 𝑁𝐸𝑑 = 430𝑘𝑁
γMo 1

Not okay so that we have to increase section

Try 10mm thick
Ag = w1 xt- (w2 -t) t = 125x10 – (75-10) x10 = 1900mm2
Ag fy 1900 mm2 x 275 Mpa
NpL,Rd = = = 525.5kN > 𝑁𝐸𝑑 = 430𝑘𝑁
γMo 1

The gross section is safe we can continue for the net section

Therefore L125*75*10 is adequate for the Design load at hand
