Long ago, prophets knew

Piae Cantiones (1582),

arr. Malcolm Archer
Long ago, prophets knew, Mary, hail! Though afraid,
Christ would come, born a Jew, She believed, She obeyed.
Come to make all things new; In her womb God is laid:
Bear his People’s burden, Till the time expected,
Freely love and pardon. Nurtured and protected,
Ring, bells, ring! Sing, choirs sing! Ring, bells, ring, etc.
When he comes, Who will make him
welcome? Journey ends! Where afar
Bethlem shines, like a star,
God in time, God in man, Stable door stands ajar.
This is God’s timeless plan: Unborn Son of Mary,
He will come, as a man, Savior, do not tarry!
Born himself of woman, Ring, bells, ring! Sing, choirs, sing!
God divinely human. Jesus comes! Jesus comes!
Ring, bells, ring, etc. We will make him welcome!
