Tutorial 1 – Network Documentation

1. What are some of the benefits of documenting a network?

2. What type of information should the logical network topology

contain?

3. What are the guidelines in labeling network equipment?

4. A small financial company, Netxpert, of 12 employees has recently


hired you as a network consultant to expand their infrastructure
to include a outward facing firewall that interfaces between the
company’s private network and the public Internet, a web and
authentication server. However, you have observed that the
network connection is slow and dropping frequently and the
wireless access point is not allowing anyone to login to the
wireless network due an unknown error. In addition to this
chaotic environment you have realized that there is no network
documentation.
The company has the following in is network;
a) Four (4) Cisco catalyst switches. One for each department
namely; Accounts, HR, IT and Customer Service.
b) Four (4) internal routers and one gateway router that
connects to the ISP.

c) One wireless access point router that feeds the entire
company.

Questions

1. What would be the best plan of action in addressing the identified


issues?
2. Explain the effects of not having network documentation on the
network troubleshooting process?
3. Describe the implications that the identified issues could have on
the company.
4. With the aid of diagrams sketch the company’s network before
and after the modification. Include IP addresses of each device on
the network.
5. Could the design of modified network be more efficient? Justify
your answer.
6. Create a quick documentation plan to document major features
of the modified network. Note: This should include all hardware,
software, configuration etc. highlighting any assumptions made.
