Case: JamTech’s Network

Scenario:
You are required to design a new network for JamTech, a leading technical
training institution in Jamaica since 2000 based on the information
provided below:

● There are three locations, main campus in Kingston and two satellite
campuses in St. Anns and Montego Bay.
● The setup is the same for all three locations, except for additional
admin staff at the main campus.
● A hassle free, minimized network solution that saves on cost and
physical equipment
● A secure connection as clients calls sometimes include sharing of
important data like credit card information
● Good quality calls and connections given that the company wants to
provide the best customer service
● An integrated, cohesive solution that can be monitored easily

General (applies to all locations)

● Single-story buildings
● A designated server room for hosting network equipment
● All cabling can be assumed to exist (or to be provided by another
company prior to the installation of the network) and must be Cat6
● All ethernet ports for end-devices should be at least fast ethernet
(100Mbps)
● 1 local file-server per location
● 6 wired IP security cameras per location storing footage on local file-
server
● Security cameras should be powered over ethernet
● Security cameras should work in case of power outage (for 10min)
● A separate VoIP network to handle voice traffic
● Wireless is required, access points should be powered over ethernet

User groups that need to be separated (rules to be defined later):

● Security cameras
● Admin and servers
● WiFi for teaching staff
● WiFi for visitors
● Audio/Video equipment

Existing WAN connections are 50Mbps between all locations, i.e., Kingston,
St. Anns, Montego Bay; no other WAN connections to be added.

Private IPs should be used

Staff/device breakdown:

● 14-18 teachers using 8 tablets to connect via WiFi

● 3 networked video projectors + 3 networked audio streaming devices –
all wired
● 2 admin staff in office located behind receptionist area with wired
network for 2 PCs + 1 networked printer
● 1 PC in reception area

Additional information for Kingston main campus

● floor plans available

● additional 50Mbps WAN connection for internet access; only one
public IP 180.10.70.4
● room for network equipment is below the office in the top right corner
(the 7.0sqm room) with existing 19” racks with sufficient space
● Additional 5 admin/management staff in the top right office with 5 PCs

Tasks:

1. Recommend appropriate specifications for the switches to be used in

this network?

2. What are the specifications of the wireless access points in each

campus? Justify your decisions.

3. Conceptualize and design the physical and logical topologies of the

company’s network including all three sites identifying all the equipment
and protocols, ip addresses, device names etc

4. Analyze requirements for internal and external security

5. Draw a redesigned network that is more efficient and secure

6. Describe how SNMP could be used to monitor the network efficiently

7. Explain how QoS and PoE and Bandwidth management could greatly
improve network performance if the company expands significantly

Grading Scheme

a. Clarity of evaluations and analysis – 20%

b. Soundness of solutions presented– 30%

c. Relevance and applicability of solutions to case – 30%

d. Creativity in solutions - 20%
