Solar power:

Uses photovoltaic cells that produce a small electric charge when exposed to
light.
A bank of cells organized into solar panels produce a significant amount of
electricity.

1
Wind power
• Wind turbines have shafts (blades) that rotate due to wind.
• Gearbox maximises the rotation of the shaft.
• Brakes slow down or stop the rotor in very windy conditions,
preventing damage to the blade.
• As the turbine rotates, the generator produces electricity

2
Tidal power:
• Twice a day in high and low tides, water that flows in to and out of coastal
bays and estuaries can spin turbines to produce electricity
• When the levels drop, water is held back by a tidal barrage (a small dam
that releases water back through a turbine).

3
Wave power:
• Waves create primarily by wind.
• Also uses turbine and generator.
• Uses the smaller differences in water levels that are caused by wind.

Biofuel - Producing energy from biomass

• Consist of plant material and animal wastes used as sources of energy

• Comes in many forms
• Can burned directly as solid fuel or converted into gaseous or liquid biofuels
• Most biomass is burned directly for heating, cooking, and industrial
processor indirectly to drive turbines and produce electricity
• (Burning wood and manure for heating and cooking supplies about 11% of
world’s energy)
