GUIDELINES: You may use unlimited number of words to answer the questions below.
1. Discuss the importance of Communication in the Nursing Profession (50 points)
Nursing profession is not just about revolving in the four corners of the hospital and taking care of
sick people. It is more than that. In order to be an effective nurse, you must know how to connect with other
people, that is when we use communication. Interacting to your client is essential because it gives us the
information we need to help our client. In communicating our patient we use verbal communication. For
example, In assessing your patient, you need to talk to him/her to get his/her basic information and to
provide your client's need. There will be an instance that your client would not be able to communicate to
you because of some disabilities, if that happens you can approach the significant others or the guardian of
your patient to provide the information that you need because you cannot come up with an intervention if
you did not communicate to your client. Thus, communication is a must because you are handling a
person's life.

2. Enumerate 5 Non-therapeutic communication techniques and provide rationale why you should avoid
using them (50 points)

Being defensive - Being a nurse or medical healthcare provides a concrete and precise solution. Thus, you will not be
defensive if your patient is asking for some advices about his/her conditions. Do not argue with your patient and just
say whatever the doctor said to you.

Rejecting - Serving people will always be your number one goal. You cannot reject patients if their life is at risk.
Prioritizing your patients is a must no matter what their situation, and no matter who they are. It is not ethical to reject
a client that is asking for your help.

Changing Topics - If the situation is at risk, you do not have to change the topic to make the atmosphere light. It
makes your client's mind unclear.

Giving personal opinion - You must be sure on everything that will comes out of your mouth because your patient is
relying to whatever you will say. Think before you speak. That must be the motto of a nurse.

Unwarranted reassurances - It is not good to your patient to give them false hope. You need to be honest to your
patient even if it will hurt them.
