Context and Rationale Reading is a key to further learning and one of the most basic skills that a child should learn. It is the process of decoding a written language or understanding the meaning of a printed material. On the other hand, truly understanding what one is reading is called reading comprehension. Reading comprehension has several levels entwined with different skills that a child needs to develop. As a child becomes more skillful and competent reader, he/she is able to comprehend implicit and explicit messages in the material and be able to analyze and explain the content of the said materials. Thus, schools have always allocated more resources and time in improving the reading comprehension skills, of the learners. With the present situation the world is facing- the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a vast shift in the delivery of instruction. Thus, the development and enhancement of the learners’ reading comprehension is at stake. One strategy in teaching reading is the use of passages based from other learning areas as springboard because reading skills are also used in expository text. According to Flanagan, et. al. (2016) reading comprehension includes passage comprehension and reading recall to assess comprehension, reasoning, and long-term retrieval. In line with the skills that the learners need to acquire is their ability to understand numbers of numerical concepts. Most students or pupils would say that they hate mathematics, or any subject that has something to do with numbers, the reason that these subjects would bring them headaches. But they couldn't do anything to escape from the subject as it is inclusive to the ‘Address: Regional Government Center, Carig Sur, Tuguegarao City, 3500 ‘Telephone Nos.: PLOT (078) 377-1065; Globe Landline (078) 255-5317, (078) 255-5318 Emall Address: sdo.cagavan@deped.gov.oh Website: deped-sdocagayan.com.oh [Dee Cade | WAESGO-RES-003_[ — Rex [00 ‘Avof-| 7-2:2018 Page: [2 curriculum. The only thing they could do is to face the challenge of understanding and knowing the importance of their mathematics subject. This is true to learners who are closed to benefits which mathematics would bring into their lives. One of the basic skills in mathematics that one must understand fully is the skill in problem solving or interpreting illustrations or drawings. The preeminence of increased problem-solving ability as a goal of mathematics instruction has long been admitted, but like the weather, problem solving has been more talked about than predicted, controlled or understood. Science and Math content has been found to be particularly effective for engaging learners. Inquiry-based science instruction has been shown to increase vocabulary, not only that directly related to the science content but fluency as measured on standard language tests. The Department of Education is implementing various intervention programs to provide support to Filipino children falling behind in reading and writing, DepEd Order 45, s. 2002 also known as Every Child A Reader Program (ECARP) measures the reading proficiency level in both English and Filipino of public elementary students. According to DepEd, ECARP aims to equip elementary pupils in public schools with strategic reading and writing skills to make them independent young readers and writers. In the recently released result of international examination like PISA, shows poor reading comprehension skills of Filipino learners. Also, the result of the conducted Phil-IRI posttest last February 2020 poses a trifling result. These events simply manifest the poor comprehension skills of learners. It is also per observation of the researcher in the retrieved modules that pupils have difficulty in reading comprehension. It is in this context that the Proponent proposes an action research entitled Electronic Passage-Based Booklet in Enhancing Grade 5 Pupils’ Comprehension Skills. II. Action Research Questions This research intends to determine the effect of electronic Passage-Based Booklets in enhancing the reading comprehension skills of Grade 5 pupils of Maura Elementary School, SY 2020-2021. Specifically, the study will answer the following questions: 1, What is the pretest and posttest scores of the pupils? 2. Is there a significant difference between the pretest and the posttest scores of the pupils after the utilization of the intervention? 3. What is the effect size of the electronic Passage-Based Booklets in enhancing the reading comprehension skills of Grade 5 pupils of Maura Elementary School? 4. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy At this moment of trying times due to the pandemic brought by covid-19, necessary adjustments have been taken. As we adjust to life in the world of remote learning, families and educators are continuing to refine at-home instructional reading routines—especially for students who experience difficulties with reading comprehension. Whether students read fluently or haltingly, they may find it challenging to summarize, answer questions, figure out unknown vocabulary, and unlock deeper meaning (Oczkus, 2020). ‘The intervention material, PBB (Passage-Based Booklets) is a printed copy of several passages, graphs, pictures and diagrams that delve into different concepts of mathematics and science, showcasing the different levels of reading comprehension from literal, inferential, and evaluative meaning. It is anchored to. the 501 Reading Comprehension Questions, 4* Edition by the Learning Express, LLC which focus on different subject matter presented in passages after each chapter. Necessary revisions were made to suit to the needs and locality of the target learners. To ensure the validity, reliability and quality of the teacher-made passages and questions, the reading comprehension pretest and posttest are quality-assured by the school quality assurance team composed of the school head, the master teacher, and a grade level teacher. The pretest and posttest will be administered and the results of which will be used to analyze the intervention’s effectiveness. ‘The innovation is Passage-Based Booklets into electronic form. This tool is in the form of an interactive e-book file format (EPUB) that is supported by many e-readers, and compatible software available for most smartphones, tablets, kindles and computers. The tool uses quizzes, audio clips, and pop-up messages to make it interactive. The electronic passage- based booklet is designed fo encouraging and motivating learners to study or develop good reading habits as they enjoy playing online or offline. The proponent will administer the e-PBB intervention starting on the fourth quarter of this school year 2020-2021. Onsite or face to face will be done to further validate the results following the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) Health Protocols. The e-reader will be installed in their laptops or smart phones and be instructed with their parents/ guardians on how to undergo with the application. ‘The tool which is an epub file will be loaded in their laptops or smart phones and will be opened with the e-reader installed. Once the epub file is opened, the children may go over each page or chapter which consists of the passage to be read. After each passage, the children will be directed to take the comprehension questions. They can read the passages and answer the quizzes many times for mastery. Furthermore, the proponent will conduct the study 30-45 minutes any day from Monday to Thursday based from the time to be agreed upon with the parents/ guardians. During this process, parents/guardians are allowed to make phone calls or video calls for any assistance if they wish to. On Fridays, onsite or home visitation will be conducted for remedial instruction using the printed materials. One passage will be tested per week. These modes of learning delivery will be conducted up to the end of the third quarter. ‘Address: Regional Government Center, Carig Sur, Tuguegarao City, 3500 Telephone Nos.: PLOT (078) 377-1065; Globe Landline (078) 255-5317, (078) 255-5318 Email Address: sdo.cagavan@dened,gov.oh Website: deved-sdocarayan.com.oh [Da Gale: | FIESG0:ES-008 [Rev [ 00 ‘Asof-| 7.2:2018 Page IV. He asked the people he met about the most beautiful thing that they know. As he approached his house, he saw his children who met him with faith in their eyes and he remembered what the priest told him. His wife came to give him a warm embrace that made him feel the love that the newlyweds praised so much. ‘That night he observed how the members of the family worked as a team. He saw cooperation that the athletes said. Finally, when everyone was in bed the painter felt the deep peace that reminded him what the soldier said, The painter smiled and he said, “I know what to paint. The denominator tells how many equal parts the whole has been divided into, and the numerator tells how many of those parts you have. You could cut something into a million parts. As long as you keep all of those parts, you still have a whole. Because we can have fractions that are equal to 1, we can use them to help use create equivalent fractions. We find common denominators when we add or subtract fractions. We then simplify fractions when we write our final answer. When you multiply or divide by a fraction that is equal to 1, the value does not change. You are simply changing the number of pieces that the whole is cut into. When you use a fraction that is equal to 1 in this way, you can think of the whole fraction as a Big Giant One. To simplify a fraction, divide by a Big Giant One. For example, if your fraction is 12/18 you can divide the top and the bottom both by the same number. This, too, can be frustrating and confusing. You might think, “What number?” Here’s how you can think about it: look at the numerator and the denominator. In this sample fraction, there is a 12 and an 18. Twelve is smaller than 18, so ask yourself if 12 divides evenly into 18. No, it doesn't. Ask yourself what numbers you can multiply to get 12 as an answer. You want to choose the largest one you can think of, except for 12 itself. Maybe you think of 6 x 2. Ask yourself if 6 will divide evenly into 12. Yes, it will. Will it divide evenly into 18? Yes, it will. So, 6 is the number you want to use. When you divide 12 by 6 your new numerator is 2. Divide 18 by 6, and your new denominator is 3. Your simplified fraction is 2/3. You have divided 12/18 by 6/6. The 6/6 is the Big Giant One for this fraction. ‘Try this process the next time you need to simplify a fraction on your homework or on a test. The more you practice simplifying fractions, the easier it becomes. You'll master fractions in no time! 17. The passage is all about __. a. simplifying fractions b. getting the Big Giant One c. getting the least common denominator d. knowing the denominator and numerator Address: Rizal Street, Maura, Aparri, Cagayan 3515 Telephone Nos./Mobile No.: 09053232664 Email Address: 102446@deped.gov.ph Website: 18. The Bar or Dot in Between Fractions and decimals are two different ways to show the same values: parts of wholes. Knowing both systems well and being able to change from one system to the other will help you succeed. Not only will this help you with math work in school, but also in soiving some of life's everyday problems. Many students have trouble changing fractions to decimals because they don't know where to start. Remember that we have a base- 10 place value system, ‘The first space to the right of the decimal point is called the tenths place. The second space is called the hundredths place. For each column that you move to the right, you are dividing the previous column by ten. For each column that you move to the left, you are multiplying the previous column by ten. Because of this predictable pattern, one easy way to turn a Fraction into a decimal is to check and see if the denominator can easily be turned into ten, one hundred, or one thousand. For example, if you need to write the fraction % as a decimal, you can multiply the numerator and the denominator both by 25 to get a new fraction: 25/100. Since the second decimal place is the hundredths place, your decimal is simply .25. The digit 5 lands in the hundredths place and gives the decimal its name: twenty-five hundredths. ‘Sometimes it is too difficult to make an equivalent fraction that is easy to convert into a decimal. In these cases, the fraction should be treated as a division problem, Similarly read the fraction from the top down. When you reach the fraction bar that separates the numerator and the denominator, read it as "divided by’. So, for the fraction 4/5, read it as "4 divided by 5." At first this may seem difficult to do. Remember, you are making a decimal. You will need to add a decimal point and a zero to the four. In this way you are able to divide 5 into 40 instead of just 4. You know 5 x 8 = 40, but with the decimal point your answer will be .8 (eight tenths). ‘Address: Rizal Street, Maura, Aparri, Cagayan 3515, ‘Telephone Nos./Mobile No.: 09053232664 Email Address: 102446@deped.gov.ph Website: With practice, you will develop your skill at converting fractions to decimals. Why should you try to make an equivalent fraction with a multiple of ten as your denominator? a. because it will be easy to divide b. because it will be easy to change it to a decimal c. because it will be easy to read d. because it will be easy to compute 31. There are plants with stinging hairs on their stems and leaves. An example is the stinging nettle (or nipay). The hairs break and release a poison when touched. Smaller animals and insects avoid eating such plants. Some plants have hard leaves because of the accumulation of silica, a hard mineral, like Nagasa bamboo. ‘The leaves are difficult to chew’ and can destroy the teeth, so animals do not eat them Other plants produce chemicals as defense against animals.
