APPLICATION OF SOLIDS.

1. Used in making CDs, DVDs and rewriteable optical disks (silver)

2. Used to make high voltage contacts (silver Cadmium oxide resists arcing)
3. Use to make button batteries (silver oxide) and laptop batteries (silver zinc oxide)
4. An alloy of platinum is used as magnetic coating for hard disk drives and optical storage systems
5. An alloy of platinum is used as fabrication material in making high grade glass for
electroluminescent diodes.
6. Iridium crucibles are used to generate single-crystal sapphire for LEDs in smart phones and flat -
panel displays and lithium-based crystals for surface acoustic weave filters in cellphones and
wireless communications
7. Nickel is commonly used in rechargeable batteries
8. Highly reflective rhodium is used as an optical coating for sophisticated electronic spectroscopy.

APPLICATIONS OF LIQUIDS.

1. Dielectric liquids are used as electrical insulators in high voltage applications e.g., transformers,
capacitors etc.
2. Molten salts (ionic liquids) are used in electrical conductivity
3. Ion liquids are used to make electric double layer capacitors
4. Ionic liquids are used in lithium-ion batteries.
5. Liquids such as oil are used as lubricants
6. Liquid hydrogen is used in rockets.

APPLICATIONS OF GASES.

1. Dielectric gases are used as insulators in high voltage applications.

2. Gases are used in circuit breakers for arc interruption besides providing insulation between
beaker contacts and from contact to the enclosure.
3. Hydrogen and oxygen react across an electrochemical cell similar to that of a battery to produce
electricity.
4. Argon is used in electrical bulbs to prevent the combustion of the filament.
5. Neon and xenon are used in gas plasma TVs since they are inert.
