Corruption in college athletics won't end until athletes are

allowed to profit from their celebrity

The Commission on College Basketball was established after FBI investigators found "illicit
payments" made by coaches, agents and sneaker company representatives to college
players and their families.

The NBA commission has recommended a number of changes that would enable the most
talented athletes to enter the professional ranks more quickly.

A commission to clean up college basketball and allow students to enter the NBA draft
announced new rules for players who sign with an agent.

The commission punted on the issue of players earning money from their likeness, yet they
did recommend that the NCAA provide more oversight of summer league games and
academic oversight.

Ms. Rice said that the NCAA couldn't legislate on the issue because of ongoing legal cases.

The NCAA has a non-stance on athletes gaining financial benefits from their athletic activity,
which has prevented athletes from receiving billions of dollars in college sports.

The NCAA should have recognized the semi-professional nature of college basketball when
it was given the opportunity to recognize it and allow college players to financially benefit.

When Division I players can get financial assistance, it will alleviate the need to pay players
surreptitiously.
