AN OVERVIEW OF INDUSTRIAL ROBOT
1. Mechanical System:
A mechanical system is a system composed
of mechanical elements, and it has two types;
1. Dynamic mechanical system, and
2. Static mechanical system.
In dynamic mechanical systems, the inertia of
their elements is accounted for, but in static
mechanical systems the inertia is neglected.
Furthermore, a dynamic mechanical system can
be either;
1. Natural system, or
2. Man-made System.
Man-made mechanical systems can be either;
1. Controlled System, or
2. Uncontrolled System.
Most engineering systems are controlled
mechanical systems.
Moreover, a controlled mechanical system may
be;
1. Robotic System, or
2. Nonrobotic System.
The latter are systems supplied with primitive
controllers, mostly analog, such as thermostats,
servovalves, etc. Robotic mechanical systems, in
turn, can be;
1. Programmable system, or
2. Intelligent System.
Intelligent mechanical systems or machines are
expected to do the following processes;
1. Perceive the environment.
2. Reason about this perception.
3. Make decisions based on this reasoning.
4. Act according to a plan specified at a very
high level. This means that the motions
undergone by the machine are decided
upon based on instructions similar to those
given to a human being, like bring me a
glass of water without spilling the water.
2. Robot History:
The term "Robot" comes from a Czech word,
robota, meaning "forced labor." The word robot
first appeared in a 1920 play by Czech writer
Karel Capek, Rossum's Universal Robots. In the
play, the robots eventually overthrow their
human creators.
Use of the industrial robot, which became
identifiable as a unique device in 1962, along
with computer-aided design (CAD) systems and
computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems,
characterizes the latest trends in the automation
of the manufacturing process.
3. Definition:
An industrial robot is defined by ISO as an
automatically controlled, reprogrammable,
multipurpose, manipulator programmable in
three or more axes, which may be either, fixed in
place or mobile for use in industrial automation
applications.
The RIA (Robotics Industries Association) has
officially given the definition for Industrial Robots.
According to RIA, “An Industrial Robot is a
reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator
designed to move materials, parts, tools, or
special devices through variable programmed
motions for the performance of a variety of tasks.”
4. Robot Anatomy:
