Cover Letter
• A one page formal letter/email sent along with
the CV for job or internship proposals
• Creates the first impression on your potential
employer or PI
• Serves as an introduction of yourself to your
potential employer or PI
• Is a space for you to project yourself as the ideal
candidate for the job
• It may also suggest how you will fit in with the
larger cause of the company/lab/department
Cover letter Structure
• Open with appropriate salutations
• Body of Cover Letter in 6 sections:
– Introduce yourself, your current position or degree, the reason
for writing (i.e. the internship position you are applying for)
and where you found the advertisement
– State your past experience (academic and work) relevant to
the application
– (What you will gain from the internship and how it will help
your career)
– Personal qualities that make you a good fit
– Your availability for the position, request for a meeting/call for
interview and contact information
– Names of 2 referees
• Thank the recipient, closing salutations (Thank you very
much; I look forward to hearing from you…)
