5 Pressure Filters
Pressure filters have been nominated for the filtration of the wave basin water and seawater clarified by the DAF
process. Combined flow capacity for the pressure filters will be a maximum of 35 ML/d, which means large filters
are required. To provide the required filter area and filter media volume while minimising space, horizontal
pressure filters are recommended. An example of horizontal pressure filters is shown below.

Figure 8 Example of a horizontal pressure filter

A total of 8 pressure filters, each approximately 2.4m diameter x 11m long, has been selected to fit within the
water treatment site. Other sizes may be possible depending on the final water treatment site layout and space
allocation.
The pressure filters will be monitored by appropriate instrumentation to enable automated operation. They will
have the following supporting processes for their proper function:
– A ferric dosing system to destabilise and coagulate suspended particles for efficient removal by the pressure
filters
– A backwashing system consisting of air scour and water backwash to remove particles caught in the filter
media
– Dirty backwash water will be sent to the wastewater handling system for further treatment by the wastewater
handling processes.
