Question 1: What is a covalent bond?

Ans: Covalent bond also known as molecular bond,is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of
electron pairs between atoms.

Question 2: Name some Group –III, IV and V elements. How many electrons are present in

Valance band of the elements of each of these groups.

Ans: Group III- Boron(B), Aluminium(Al),Galium(Ga),Indium(In),Thallium(Tl)

Has 3 electrons present in valance band.

Group IV- Carbon(C), Silicone(Si),Germanium(Ge),Tin(Sn),Lead(Pb)

Has 4 electrons present in valance band.

Group V- Nitrogen(N),Phosphorus(P),Arsenic(As),Antimony(Sb),Bismuth(Bi)

Has 5 electrons present in valance band.

Question 3. Define Resistance and Resistivity?

Ans: Resistance is nothing but the property of a conductor that opposes the flow of electric current.

While resistivity is the internal resistance offered by a material per unit length for unit cross

section.

Question 4: What is conductivity and what is its relationship with resistivity?

Ans: Conductivity is defined as the measure of ability of a material to conduct electricity.

1
Conductivity(𝝈)= 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦(𝝆)

Question 5: If 750 µA of current is flowing through 11 kΩ of resistance, what is the voltage

drop across the resistor?

Ans: Given:

I= 750uA=750 x 10−6 A

R=11kΩ=11 x 103 Ω

V=IR

V=750 x 10−6 x 11 x 103

V= 825 x 10−2 =8.25 V

Question 6: With the help of color coding first determine the value of resistances R 1 , R 2 , and

R 3 , (use table 1) then determine the value of equivalent resistance if they are connected in:

(a) Series fashion.

(b) Parallel fashion.

S.no RESISTANCE COLOR

1 𝑅1 Yellow,Violet,Red,Silver

2 𝑅2 Blue,Gray,Black,Golden

3 𝑅3 Green,Blue,Black

Ans: 𝑅1 =47 x 102 ±10% Ω

𝑅2 =68 x 100 ±5%Ω

𝑅3 = 56Ω

For Series connection

Rs= 4700+68 +56 ±(10%+5%)

= 4824 ± 15%Ω

For Parallel connection

1 1 1 1
=
𝑅𝑝 𝑅1
+ 𝑅2
+ 𝑅3

𝑅1 ∗𝑅2 ∗𝑅3
Rp= 𝑅
2 𝑅1 +𝑅2 𝑅3 +𝑅3 𝑅1

Rp= 30±4%Ω
