Because the answers to these questions matter, we as
ACFAR exist to equip you, and today’s church, to answer
them.
What is ACFAR?
ACFAR stands for The Africa Centre for Apologetics
Research. We’re a non-profit, non-denominational
organisation of evangelical conviction. ACFAR is also an
affiliate of the Centers for Apologetics Research (CFAR), a
unique international network of evangelical cult-research
and education agencies.
What does ACFAR do?
ACFAR serves churches in Africa in the crucial area of
apologetics––defending the faith.
Our purpose is to equip you to stand when your faith is
challenged by cultic groups/organisations like the
Mormons, Branhamism or Jehovah’s Witnesses;
controversial movements led by “prophets”/ “apostles”;
or by opposing ideologies like atheism or Islam.
We provide training, literature and other resources to
equip Christians to answer these challenges.
Highlighting an urgent need
Our Lord Jesus makes it clear that the enemy’s main tool
against the church is deception (John 8:44; Rev. 12:9,
13:14; cf. Gen. 3:13). It is through deception that the devil
keeps unbelievers from the truth (2 Cor. 4:4) and
attempts to draw Christians, even you, away from the
truth (Matt. 24:24). Satan has been destroying souls since
the beginning through false teaching, twisting the truth
of God.
Two things are true of any church: Christ is working to build
it (Matt. 16:18), and the devil is working to destroy it (John
10:10). As a minister, do you both proclaim and defend the
gospel, as the Apostles did in their epistles?
ACFAR’s mission — a 3-fold emphasis
We support and equip pastors, Christian leaders and
individuals everywhere to minister to a world that’s been
infiltrated by anti-Christian and pseudo-Christian ideas
through books, “entertainment”, learning institutions, the
internet, televangelists and door-to-door proselytizers. This
is the task of apologetics.
Our main emphasis is threefold:
Discernment—We train pastors and believers in the crucial
skill of discerning truth from error. Very often, in the words
of Charles Spurgeon, we need to know the crucial
difference “between right and almost right”, a difference
often exploited by cults and false teachers.
Defence of the faith—Believers are called to defend the
faith, “always being prepared to make a defense to anyone
who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Pet.
3:15). ACFAR can help you answer today’s self-proclaimed
prophets, cults and atheists.
Evangelism—We have a special emphasis on cult
evangelism. This means clearly, confidently and
compassionately helping people entrapped in cultic
groups to know Jesus Christ as the only true and living
Saviour, and to grasp the hope that only He can offer
them!
How does ACFAR do this?
Research : ACFAR brings together a team of competent
Christian researchers and teachers in East Africa and
abroad. We monitor new and controversial movements
and influential doctrines and prepare simple, practical
apologetic responses for churches.
Seminars and trainings : We teach seminars and offer
trainings for pastors, churches, Bible-school students,
Christian workers and groups with special vulnerabilities
(e.g., women and youth).
Developing Resources : We produce well-researched and
theologically accessible material to help you defend your
faith. These are are available from our offices at little to no
cost. They include:
