Safety Information
Safety Information
This instrument is designed to conform to IEC 61010 Safety
Standards, and has been thoroughly tested for safety prior
to shipment. However, using the instrument in a way not
1
described in this manual may negate the provided safety
features.
Before using the instrument, be certain to carefully read the 2
following safety notes:
5
• Protective gear
This instrument measures live lines. To
prevent electric shock, use appropriate 6
protective insulation and adhere to
applicable laws and regulations.
• With regard to the electricity supply,
there are risks of electric shock, heat
7
generation, fire, and arc flash due to
short circuits. Individuals using an elec-
trical measuring instrument for the first
time should be supervised by a techni-
8
cian who has experience in electrical
measurement.

Safety Information
Notation
In this document, the risk seriousness and the hazard levels
are classified as follows.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that will
result in death or serious injury to the operator.
1
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that may re-
sult in death or serious injury to the operator.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that may re-
2
sult in minor or moderate injury to the operator or dam-
age to the instrument or malfunction.
Indicates advisory items related to performance or cor-
rect operation of the instrument.
3
Indicates a high voltage hazard.
If a particular safety check is not performed or the in-
strument is mishandled, this may give rise to a hazard- 4
ous situation; the operator may receive an electric
shock, may get burnt or may even be fatally injured.
Indicates prohibited actions. 5
Indicates the location of reference information.
Indicates quick references for operation and remedies
for troubleshooting.
6
* Additional information is presented below.
Accuracy 9
We define measurement tolerances in terms of rdg. (read-
ing) and dgt. (digit) values, with the following meanings:
10
dgt. The smallest displayable unit on a digital mea-
(resolution) suring instrument, i.e., the input value that
causes the digital display to show a "1" as the
least-significant digit. 11
rdg. The value currently being measured and indi-
(reading or cated on the measuring instrument.

Safety Information
Measurement categories
To ensure safe operation of measuring instruments, IEC
61010 establishes safety standards for various electrical
environments, categorized as CAT II to CAT IV, and called
measurement categories.
Operating Precautions
Follow these precautions to ensure safe operation and to
obtain the full benefits of the various functions.
1
Preliminary Checks
Before using the instrument, verify that it 2
operates normally to ensure that no dam-
age occurred during storage or shipping. If
you find any damage, contact your autho-
rized Hioki distributor or reseller.
3
If the test lead or the instrument is dam-
aged, there is a risk of electric shock. 4
Perform the following inspection before
using the instrument:
• Before using the instrument check that
the coating of the test leads are neither
5
ripped nor torn and that no metal parts
are exposed. Using the instrument
under such conditions could result in 6
electric shock. Replace the test leads
with those specified by our company.
• Verify that the instrument operates nor-
mally to ensure that no damage 7
occurred during storage or shipping. If
you find any damage, contact your
authorized Hioki distributor or reseller. 8
• To prevent an electric shock, confirm
that the white or red portion (insulation
layer) inside the cable is not exposed. If
a color inside the cable is exposed, do 9
not use the cable.
10
Precautions during shipment
During shipment of the instrument, handle it 11
carefully so that it is not damaged due to a
vibration or shock.

of discs free of dirt and scratches. When 4
writing text on a disc's label, use a pen or
marker with a soft tip.
• Keep discs inside a protective case and
do not expose to direct sunlight, high tem- 5

Maintenance and
Service 8 1
• If damage is suspected, check the "Troubleshooting" sec-
tion before contacting your authorized Hioki distributor or
2
reseller.
• The instrument contains a built-in backup lithium battery,
which offers a service life of about 10 years. If the date 3
and time deviate substantially when the instrument is
switched on, it is the time to replace that battery. Contact
your authorized Hioki distributor or reseller.
• The life of the battery pack is 500 charging cycles or
4
approximately one year of use. If the operating time is
extremely short after the battery pack has been charged
correctly, replace it with a new battery pack. 5
• Do not replace the lithium battery. This will void the
guarantee.
6
Shipment
When transporting the instrument be sure to observe the
following precautions: 7
• To avoid damage to the instrument, remove the batteries
from the instrument. Moreover, be sure to pack in a dou-
ble carton. Damage occurring during transportation is not
covered by the warranty.
8
• When sending the instrument for repair, be sure to include
details of the problem.
9
Calibrations
The calibration period varies depending on the status of the
instrument or installation environment. We recommend that
the calibration period be determined in accordance with the
10
status of the instrument or installation environment. Please
contact your Hioki distributor to have your instrument peri-
odically calibrated. 11
