2. Define operating systems. Describe the basic features and the three categories of operating systems.
Operating systems is a collection of programs that handles technical tasks. The basic features of the operating
systems are booting which is the process of starting a computer. Warm boot means that your computer is
already on and you restart it without turning it off. Cold boot means starting the computer that has been
turned off. Lastly, gesture control is the ability to control operations with finger movements. Three categories
of operating systems are embedded, network, and stand-alone operating systems.
3. What are mobile operating systems? Describe leading mobile operating systems.
Mobile operating systems are embedding operating system and the leading mobile operating systems are
Android, iOS, and Windows phone 8.
4. What are desktop operating systems? Compare Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Chrome OS. Discuss
virtualization.
Desktop operating systems are operating systems commonly used by individuals. Windows is the most
commonly used microcomputer. MAC OS is not as commonly used but runs on MAC. Linux is an operating
system that is an extension of UNIX versions. Chrome OS focuses on internet connectivity and cloud
computing. Virtualization supports multiple OS’ that operate independently by running virtualization software.
5. Discuss utilities. What are the most essential utilities? What is a utility suite?
Utilities are specialized programs designed to make computing easier. The most essential utilities are
troubleshooting, antivirus, backup, and file compression programs. A utility suites combine several programs
into one package.
