Novel: Oliver Twist

1. How do we know from the first moment that Oliver’s life will be difficult?

We know his life will be difficult because had no family, he became an orphan almost

immediately after his birth and the novel tells us how hard it was for people to help kids in a

situation Oliver was in. With a lack of support both emotionally and physically, he had no one

but himself to get him through the hard times, and that’s what makes him so lonely since the

very beginning.

2. Select one passage where Dickens uses strong irony- what does he really mean in the

passage?

Dickens uses strong irony in the passage where there is a talk about how a mom treats their

children and the demand that comes with it. It is ironic considering Oliver Twist never had a

mother really, or was taken care of the way Dickens wrote about.

3. What are the attitudes of the adults in charge of Oliver’s care?

He was treated worse than an animal, constantly being threatened, underfed, solitary confined in

the dark for days. Their attitudes were terrible, and it showed how much they did not want Oliver

with them.

4. What do you think might happen to Oliver as he grows up? Justify your answer.

By the way he is treated, it is only safe to assume he will grow with some type of resentment

towards everyone who treated him like that. I think everyone who went through something so

traumatic ends up with a little bit of resentment, although they learn how to forgive later on.
