Problem Set 1.10

Use a Mathematical Model Strategy

A. Solve the following problems completely. Write your complete

solutions following Polya’s 4-step approach in problem solving.

1. Rona’s living room is 13 by 16 ft, and she wants to carpet it, except
for a border of uniform width. What dimensions should the carpet be
if she can afford only 108 ft2?

2. Jason is now thrice as old as Helen. Three years from now, Jason
will be six times as old as Helen one year ago. Find their present
ages.
3. A and B can paint a certain house if A works 6 days and B works 12
days, or they can paint the house if A works 9 days and B works 8
days. How long would it take each working alone to paint the
house?
4. What is the simple interest rate applied if an investment of Php
37,500 accumulates to Php45,937.00 in the period of 1.5 years?
5. Joan prepared 10 glasses of lemon juice containing 5 percent pure
lemon. How many glasses of water must be added to the original
mixture to reduce the concentration to 2 percent lemon?

B. Formulate and solve real-life non-routine problems illustrating the

use a mathematical model strategy. Record your explanation to the
solutions of the problem in a 3-5minute video.
