Poem: Free to be Bound

Here comes the night, I sit in the terrace

Thinking of his love and promises,

The days would he kiss me on the forehead!

Then, would I hold in my hands his face.

I cry and moan as not his flower to bloom

May be I was not utterly his to deserve

Was I the Cruelest creature in the universe!

To deprive him of his air and the room

A day, says Amica, is dry and gloomy

As long as it is a fact to behold

Anyone would boast about her fight

As long as a situation is feeble and tiny

3

Are you as free as the clouds in the sky?

Nay, you are the apple falling from the tree.

The moon will shine as long as it orbits him

Alas! Should thou morn if ye burn and cry?

Analysis:

This poem is written specifically in consideration of the general public rather than the academic

community. The audiences whom it focuses on are the people, especially couples, who suffer

from interpersonal conflicts.

In the poem, the argument is shifted in terms of using the first-person narrative and making it

personal and subjective to fit the audience. Secondly, the poem's purpose is usual than academic,

as it has a moral and literary significance that is intended to reach the targeted audiences. The

narrator of the poem is a woman who is presenting her inner emotions and conflicts which seem

to be resulting from stress in a relationship. With the depiction of a situation more common to

the general public, the poem sheds light on the healthy ways of coping with interpersonal

conflicts; the narrator in the second stanza presents the reader with the advice she gets from her

friends. The name of her friend “Amica” literally means a buddy or a close friend in Latin. Thus,

the presence of a vent is a healthy coping mechanism recognized fitting which I argued in my

assignment (Woehnker, 2020). The poem is subjective in its interpretation and can be analyzed

through different perspectives. I, as a writer, presented a woman who is stressed in her

relationship due to reasons like the change of her mate’s behavior or his ignorance. She is seen

doing negative self-talking in the second stanza which was shown as an argument in my paper

(Hall, 2019).
