Need for achievement. Explain each of this needs and tell if you want to be a leader, what needs that we need the most and what needs,
that we need to be low? (20 points)
 David McClelland proposed that in order to become a great leader, one’s needs are acquired overtime as a result of their
experiences. As he studied the needs of various individuals to become a leader he was able to classify them as need for power,
need for affiliation and need for achievement based. That made him into conclusion that every person who aimed to become a
leader holds an aspiration for achievement, power or affiliation. Each leader has a tendency to be motivated by one of these
needs. The need for achievement is the greatest for those leader who have a strong desire to excel they seek neither power nor
approval rather the only focus is on success. They also tend to prefer work that has a moderate chance for success. On the other
hand they tend to avoid situation that are low risk and those that are high risk. They avoid the low risk situations because of the
pressure of accomplishment related to low risk activities with the belief that things which come easy are not as a through
measure of success. Leaders who needs for achievement avoided high risk because of the fear that success might be related to
luck than actual effort. Indeed the need for achievement prefers to work alone or with others achievers and work to provide a
challenging projects filled with attainable goals. Those who needs for power, seek agreement and compliance. Their approval and
recognition are not of their concern the power seekers have a strong desire to control others or cause them to be to behave in a
way that is consistent with the powers seekers’ wishes. So for example, Adrian has a high need for power and often manipulates
his employees to do his work for him he later takes credit for it. Lastly is the need of affiliation, it’s a person need to feel a sense
of involvement and belonging. It’s a need for an open and sociable interpersonal relationships, in other words it is a desire for
relationship based on cooperation and mutual understanding. For me in order to become a leader the needs that we need the
most is the need for achievement and the need that need to be low is the need for power.
