• Explain the value of Cisco certif ications in the job market.

• Identif y current hiring trends in IT/networking.
• Identif y f uture networking career certif ications and skills.
• Identif y additional networking career paths.

Background / Scenario
Jobs in Inf ormation Technology (IT) and computer networking continue to grow. Most employers require some
f orm of industry standard certif ication, degree, or other qualif ications f rom their potential employees,
especially those with limited experience. The Cisco CCNA certif ication is a known and established entry level
networking certif ication that is respected in the industry. There are additional levels and kinds of Cisco
certif ications that one can attain, and each certif ication may enhance employment opportunities as well as
salary range.
In this lab, you will do some targeted job searching on the web, to f ind what types of IT and computer
networking jobs are available; what kinds of skills and certif ications you will need; and the salary ranges
associated with the various job titles.

Part 1: Research Job Opportunities


In Part 1, you will use a web browser to visit the popular job listing web sites monster.com and salary.com.

Step 1: Open a web browser and go to a job listing website.


In the URL address bar type in http://monster.com and press Enter.

Step 2: Search for networking related jobs.
a. Type the word Network in the Job title box. Notice that the website of f ers context sensitive suggestions
based on the keywords provided. Either click on, or f inish typing the words, Network Administrator and
click the SEARCH button (see image below).

c. Now f ocus your search by adding terms to the keywords f ield box. Try terms like Cisco CCNA, CCNP,
CCNA Security, CCNA Voice, etc.
d. Now try ref ining your search by adding in dif f erent geographical locations. Did you find jobs in the
locations you entered?
• Yes, I found a job in the location I choose which is somewhere in the Philippines only.

e. Try searching a dif f erent website. Go to http://salary.com and click the Job Search menu bar button.

f. Now add a search term like Information Technology to the job title f ield box and click Submit.

g. In the image below, note the large number of matching search results. There are also easy to use tools
f or ref ining your search, in the column to the lef t.

h. Spend some time searching f or jobs and looking through the search results. Take note of what skills are
required f or dif ferent job titles and the range of starting salaries.

Part 2: Reflect on Research


In Part 2, you answer questions based on your research f indings. a.

• No
d. Did you f ind any jobs that you are interested in? If so, which ones and what skills or certif ications do they
require?
• Yes, I found a job that I’m interested in. They need a Bachelor's Degree in Computer
Science/Information Technology, Engineering or equivalent, that have at least 5-7 years experience in
the related field. And they also need a person who’s willing to work closely with the business from
inception to implementation to deliver functionalities to UAT on a weekly sprint cycle and both willing
to work in day and night shift.
