Knitted toys area great way forbeginners to get
to grips with the basic techniques of knitting You

The shaping of Alan's fantastic gnomes involves
pathing more complicated than increasing by
knitting into the front and the back ofthestiteh,
and knitting two stitches together to decrease a
stitch (sce pages 41 and 99 fora photographic

TO MAKE UP
For best results, sew seams and join pieces usin
mattress stitch (see page 136), working with
right side of knitting uppermast. A one stitch
knitted seam turning has been allowed on all
pieces to accommodate this method.
BEAN BAG FOR BASE
First make beanbag by sewingaa line of large
running stitches around the edge of the musi
circle. Daw up slightly and fil ith granules,
then gather tightiy and fasten off securely,
Should you prefer to omit the beanbag, simply
fil entire body with toy stuffing
BODY AND HEAD
Join body seam from gathered base edge up to
last knitted increase row on body Insert beans
into base of body, then join remainder of body
and head seam, stopping at last increase row
head, Stuff top of body and head firmly, then jo
remaining section of head seam Work a
gathering thread through every stitch on top
edge of head, draw up tightly and fasten off
