Diversity at Pfizer

Abstract

Pfizer, a global biopharmaceutical company, embraces diversity in the workforce. The

following case study explores Pfizer's vision of increasing diversity and its proactive focus on

creating resource groups. The case analysis will uncover legal benefits obtained by the

company's mindset and suggestions on further supporting this notion.

1. Why is Pfizer interested in improving diversity and inclusion at the company?

Pfizer is a biopharmaceutical company that believes in hiring a mixture of ethnicity,

genders, religion, socioeconomic classes, and in general, people from all walks of life. The

company strongly believes having diversity will help the company achieve innovation. Their

perspective is that fostering diversity will bring about creative thinking and encourage

inclusion. By having people from different backgrounds on their team, they obtain talented

employees who can offer a variety of capacities, experiences, ideas, opinions, and originality.

With a well-rounded team, the company gains a solid and valuable staff.

Moreover, hiring a diverse team improves its reputation and gives them a positive image.

Pfizer's applicant pool is widened while appealing to a broader customer base. Their

commitment to this movement has also created programs and groups that help represent

minorities. These programs help drive an inclusive culture, support their values, and provide

a safe space for underrepresented employees.

2. How does a proactive focus on diversity and inclusion improve Pfizer's legal

compliance?

Pfizer's strategic approach to diversity and inclusion helps them abide by federal staffing

laws and prevent discrimination lawsuits. The company is meeting equal opportunity

employment and affirmative action designed by the U.S. government to "eliminate

discrimination and its past effects" (Phillips, 2020). In addition, Pfizer does not have to worry

about an affirmative action plan to remedy a problem. They can easily demonstrate their

hiring is based on credentials or experience and not biased opinions.

Besides avoiding legal disputes, Pfizer creates an environment of trust and mutual respect

as everyone's backgrounds are appreciated and utilized. A diverse crew offers higher

financial returns and opens doors to new groups and opportunities.

3. If you were in charge of diversity and inclusion a Pfizer, what would you do to

further improve diversity and inclusion at the company?

As a human resource manager for Pfizer, I would add to their efforts by enforcing new

recruitment policies. I would source and bring on new talent from different labor markets,

communities, and minority groups like LGBT, disabled, Latinos, and African American

resource groups. Furthermore, I would host fun interactive events like a potluck to give our

diverse staff a chance to build relationships outside of the work environment. Personal

interaction can help diminish stereotypes and recognize new perspectives. It also allows

employees to feel they are part of a team while promoting inclusion.

In addition, to improve diversity and inclusion, I would have continuous management

training on proper employment practices and make sure all employees understand there is a

zero-tolerance policy on discrimination. I would also emphasize Pfziers's diversity statement,

"Everyone has something to offer. Diverse teams are more collaborative, more accepting of

different perspectives, and more representative of the world we all share" (Pfzier, 2022). Ensuring

what we stand for appears at job careers, job descriptions, and all online hiring platforms.

Last, I would pitch internships/scholarships to upper management and work on a referral

program. Doing so would give under-represented students a chance to advance quicker, or even

the simple opportunity to enter their dream field. The referral incentive would help motivate

employees to help bring on board diversity.
