Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Presentation on a Mathematical Objective

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE6.G.1: Find area of right triangles, other triangles, quadrilaterals,
and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply
these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1.3 Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of
resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful
learning experiences for themselves and others.

Selected Technology Tool:

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The activity that I have planned for the students is great for supporting all students. Giving the
students the option to design their own presentation is great for students who like to express
themselves creatively. Also, having the students work independently lets me know what the students
know, and I can see who needs extra support. The students can also have the option of teaching their
presentation to the class, which helps them to become even stronger experts on their topic.
Lesson idea implementation:
In accordance to the standard, students are going to be going taught area of polygons and their
implementation of real-world contexts. The project will be introduced at the end of the unit. Each
student will be given a part of the standard/lesson and it will be their responsibility to create a
presentation that covers all that they have learned about that topic. Since I want to build a community
in my classroom, I will work with the students to draft a rubric that they will have a say in. I will
grade their presentations based on that rubric. Students that do not do well on their project will have to
be re-taught whatever they may need help in.

To take the students to another level, they can present the presentation to their peers. Also, the
students can engage in a peer review session to be able to assess their classmates. The students can
also edit their classmate’s presentations based on their critiques. I will give the students feedback via
audio recordings that I will insert into the Power Point slides.
Reflective Practice:
This assignment was designed to be completed at the end of the unit. This is a great way for

students to review all that they have learned, without each of them needing to go back through their
notes for the entire unit. Each of the student gets a specific section that they become experts, and then
in turn they go and teach it to the rest of the class so the rest of the class can also become experts with
them. As mentioned above, to extend the lesson the students will review each other's presentations
and give them feedback and critique. To go further than that, students can make edits to their peers’
presentations before giving them back with their critiques.
