He was born on May 12, 1820 in Florence, at that time the capital of the Grand
Duchy of Tuscany. Belonging to a wealthy family, she was the daughter
of William Edward Nightingale and Frances Smith; Frances, her older
sister was a writer and journalist. Every May 12, coinciding with the
anniversary of his birth, the International Nursing Day is celebrated.
