IT 123 - Introduction to Human Computer Interaction

2nd Assignment

Overview
For this assignment, you will be choosing and describing two products that require
human interaction. The goal is to practice describing and analyzing a product’s
interface as well as develop an awareness to different kinds of users and to what
constitutes good or poor design.

Choosing your products

To complete this assignment, you will need to choose two products: one that you
find particularly easy to use and one you find difficult to use. Simple software
applications (e.g. calculators, image viewers, text editors) or Web sites are
examples of possible choices. Public domain software and Web CGI’s and applets
are a good place to look. Tangible products such as ATM machines or CTA ticket
dispensers are acceptable too. On the other hand, complicated office and business
software such as word processors, database systems, or spreadsheets are too
complicated given the time and effort expected of this assignment.
Describing your products
For the product you find easy to use, describe or answer the following (each
in a few sentences).
With a few sentences, summarize an important difference between the two
products that affected your answers.
Here are some considerations for creating that outstanding report:

• While obvious answer (e.g. “A hearing-impaired user would have difficulty

with the telephone menu system”) may technically answer a question,
consider less obvious cases for describing usability issues.
• Consider the usability of your report. For example, think of helpful ways to
format your report so that I can quickly find your answers.
• Consider as user’s experience and knowledge when answering the questions.
Be precise when describing these characteristics.
PRODUCT THAT I FOUND EASY TO USE

1. What is the product?

▪ Windows Operating System
2. What task does the product perform?
▪ Windows Operating System is easy to use and it easy to learn. It
performed task file, memory process management, handling input and
output and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.
3. Present one way in which this product is easy for you to use.
▪ Easy to install a software application when you are using Windows OS.
4. How would someone else find this product difficult to use?
▪ They find this product difficult because the speed and when you
accidentally download a virus it is really difficult to fix because the security
in Windows OS is not much good enough to detect a malicious virus and
if there is an update it takes a long time.

5. How could this difficulty be resolved?

▪ Because of this difficulty and I am a Windows OS user I was downloaded

an application called karpersky it really helped for me and the difficulty
on the update I set the setting to manually updated so I can manage the
update.
PRODUCT THAT I FOUND DIFFICULT TO USE

1. What is the product?

▪ Linux Operating System
2. What task does the product perform?
▪ An operating system is the software that directly manages a
system's hardware and resources, like CPU, memory, and storage.
The OS sits between applications and hardware and makes the
connections between all of your software and the physical resources
that do the work
3. Present one way in which this product is easy for you to use.
▪ It is really fast when you download an application and it is really
different to the Windows Operating System and the theme of the linux is
very cool.

4. How would someone else find this product difficult to use?

▪ If you are making a document file because there is no Microsoft word,
Excel, Powerpoint and etc. on the Linux Operating System.
5. How could this difficulty be resolved?

▪ All you need is install the software application on your linux operating
system so you can start now using linux.
